OK, Rand Runs for President in 2016. Great. But...There's One Important Question.

Who runs for his Senate seat? We NEED to make sure his seat is occupied by a liberty-minded person!

Perhaps Thomas Massie? 4 years in the House should be enough for his time to shine in the upper chamber, yes?

If Rand gets his way he will be on both ballots, although that issue hasn't yet been resolved.

Something I just now thought about: two liberty people want to run for Governor of Kentucky. James Comer and Cathy Bailey.

Perhaps one of them can be convinced to run for Senate instead?

Worst case scenario and Rand doesn't get his bills through allowing him to run for both, he could simply have his wife or even somebody like Bunning run for President in Kentucky. You don't vote for a person when you vote for President- you are voting for electors. That way the only way we lose the Senate seat is if Rand actually wins the Presidency and has to give it up himself.

The next governor could potentially appoint BOTH Kentucky senators. 1) If Rand is on both ballots and elected president - that's one. 2) If a McConnell henchman gets elected governor, he will resign before his term is up and have him appoint Trey Grayson (who moved back to KY) or someone to have the incumbent advantage.

I can't imagine the stakes being any higher in this race. A single election could potentially determine the THREE highest offices in Kentucky, and the direction of our politics for decades to come. Another reason people should've taken the primary against McConnell seriously and done everything possible to remove his clout once and for all before it snowballed into this.

Comer is probably our best bet as far as an ally with positioning to win. He's worked with liberty groups, is extremely popular in the state (in 2011 he won Ag Commissioner with around 66% while every other state-wide Republican lost big-time,) and he's been a good ally to Rand and moved a lot in our direction... he's defied the party establishment and even taken on intimidation from the state police to get industrial hemp through. (He was skeptical of hemp until meeting with liberty groups, then he became its biggest champion.) The apparent establishment candidate (Heiner) has already loaned himself $4 million to take Comer on. So even though I am a huge Bevin supporter, I don't think he should get in this race... it would only split the liberty vote. As far as Cathy Bailey... I'm not sure she'll really get in this race, but if she does, would probably split the establishment vote. I know she supported Rand in the primary and since, but so did David Williams and he is the epitome of establishment... some folks are just smart politicians.

I believe Massie has said he only wants to be a congressman and go no further. Whether he changes his mind or not i dont know

I don't exactly follow you, but Mitch likes Rand and I bet every dollar I have that he will support Rand.

He's saying the next Governor could appoint two Senators. One being the vacancy that occurs when Rand wins the Presidency, and the other being McConnell resigning before his term is up so that his replacement can be appointed rather than elected. The first one we can only hope comes to pass. The second one I don't see happening. McConnell has dedicated his entire life to being a Washington power broker. He's not going to surrender the ring of sauron, especially now that he's finally about to become Majority Leader. McConnell will cling to office till the bitter end, just like Lautenberg, Thurmond, Byrd, and Specter.

Indeed. Well, whether McConnell retires or dies in office, the effect is the same: The governor will appoint his replacement. It'll be a world of trouble if a henchman of his appoints our senator(s). Could be the difference between Thomas Massie or Trey Grayson.

Thomas is a very down to earth fellow, but I think he'll answer the call to serve when we need a good liberty candidate for senator, as he did when we needed him to leave his Judge Executive post to run for congress.

no one has ever run for president, and senate. VP-yes, (LBJ, Lieberman, plus Paul Ryan for his house seat). it's risky to cling to the senate seat.
