Official Progressive Rock / Progressive Metal Thread

I think Opeth wins at prog as well. :D

I always liked Dream Theater, but why on earth didn't they ever replace their vocalist? He tries to sing way to high for what he can actually pull off, usually it sounds "ok" on the CD and like garbage live. When you are actually at the show, their instruments are so loud you can't notice him so much, but when you hear a live recording it is just trash.

There was one I heard where they were playing "Pull Me Under" (I think) and he did so bad that he completely gave up about half way in, and then you hear Mike Portnoy bitching him out, assuming in front of the whole crowd because it was just a soundboard recording, and then they try the song again. He finishes it but it sounds horrible.

I sometimes wonder if it just an ego thing with them and they would rather deal with a bad singer who makes them look good over a talented singer who would make the band sound good.

Many people ask that question. When they started, his style was popular. Kind of out of style for the past decade. If they wait long enough, he'll be back in style. Their newest release will include a special edition without vocals. :D

Mike Portnoy does work with some other singers though. Like Transatlantic.

Here's a Transatlantic video (a very stripped down song for them):

The lyrics seem very libertarian to me.

"Take A Bow"

Corrupt
You're corrupt
Bring corruption to all that you touch
Hold
You behold
And beholden for all that you've done
And spin
Cast a spell
Cast a spell on the country you run
And risk
You will risk
You will risk all their lives and their souls

And burn
You will burn
You will burn in hell, yeah you'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell
Yeah you'll burn in hell
For your sins

And our freedom's consuming itself
What we've become
It's contrary to what we want

Take a bow

Death
You bring death, and destruction to all that you touch
Pay
You must pay
You must pay for your crimes against the earth
Yeah hex
Feed the hex
Feed the hex on the country you love

Now beg
You will beg
You will beg for their lives and their souls

Now burn
You will burn
You will burn in hell, yeah you'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell
Yeah you'll burn in hell
You'll burn in hell
Yeah you'll burn in hell
For your sins

"Knights Of Cydonia"

Come ride with me
Through the veins of history
I'll show you how god
Falls asleep on the job

And how can we win
When fools can be kings
Don't waste your time
Or time will waste you

No one's gonna take me alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive

That's the second beat and one of only two that my Dad taught me when I was 8 years old.
He called it a shuffle beat.
The other was just a straight 4/4 1 and 2 beat.

NEU! is so great

You can really hear the Sex Pistols in this, listen to the singing. I'd bet a lot more than a penny that Lydon heard this, I can't stand his group though.

But then I found another bass drum and it set beside the other one and I had to close my hi hat stand and wire it to the new bass drum so it wouldn't fall over.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

My Personal evolution on the drum kit.
Steely Dan - Gaucho - Mainly cut my teeth on "Hey Nineteen." Played it over and over for a talent show.
Its a bit fuzzy...Thinkin'.
AC-DC - I learned it all, every damn song up to For Those About to Rock.
Iron Maiden - Everything up to Number of the Beast.
RUSH!!! Neil Peart blew my mind... I still can't play all of Neil's stuff but I give it a good run for it's money. I can boast the entire 2112 album cover to cover.
Megadeth! I'm a big Nick Menza fan. I can play Rust in Peace cover to cover.
PanterA!!! Vinnie is a bad man. Still a good deal of his stuff that I have not mastered and not for lack of trying. I can pull off quite a lot of PanterA covers.

Its been a long time.
I need to set up my kit again.
Its really good exercise.
