Coal releases more radioactive material into the air than nuclear power generates.

To reduce nuclear waste, you can use breeder reactors. Better yet, avoid using uranium and use thorium. Thorium is prevalent, and cannot meltdown on it's own (it requires a neutron source for a reaction).

Using thorium and/or breeder reactors GREATLY reduces nuclear waste material, and what is produced decays quickly as opposed to the current waste generated.

The main reason why people haven't supported nuclear is fear, plain and simple. Nuclear is actually the cleanest source we can use, sans alternative sources.
