Official CPAC 2014 open discussion thread

Even the caricature twit from Arizona that spoke directly after Cruz nearly made me barf when he paused at one point and said that he had almost slipped up and said "President Romney." Then proceeded to fawn speculatively with the words "Wouldn't that have been great?"....What kind of pathetic charade is this? Is the CPAC audience really this naive and gullible?
 
Christie spent 99% of his speaking time selling the idea of electing a governor as our next President. His speaking style is good..better than I had recalled. I'm sure he scored some solid points. He speaks off the cuff with a tone of sincerity and authenticity, and with a firm but folksy fluidity. I could imagine him performing well in a general election, but just can't see how he wins the nomination. Although Mittens and McSame did it, so why not Christie? I mean, for gosh sakes, does everyone remember that McSame (in 2007, before any primaries but after numerous debates) had to fly coach, carry his own luggage, and accept rides from volunteers just to get to his campaign speaking engagements?

I don't get why people get so fixated on the whole "president should have executive experience as a state governor" thing. Historically it doesn't seem to make a difference in terms of electability, and as far as competency we have had good and bad presidents who have and haven't been governors. Leadership is the quality you should look for. If you are a leader then you generate your own "executive" experience no matter what job you have.

"Executive experience" is something people only pretend to care about when their preferred candidate has it, and their opposition does not. Can't even recall all the times I've seen 'Freepers' talking about how important executive experience is - oh Palin has it and Obama does not, that's really important! - but you ask almost any of them if they prefer Christie or Cruz, and see how relevant executive experience becomes.

True FreeRepublic story: a few days ago, I saw a post there by a person with a tagline indicating they support Cruz for President in 2016, asking how anyone could support Elizabeth Warren for President because (paraphrasing): "she was only elected in 2012 and hasn't accomplished anything or passed any important legislation."

Agreed. And I think maybe the status quo is talking up "governors" this round because they are terrified of Rand specifically. On the other hand, there haven't been many Senators advance to POTUS directly from their senate gig. Soetoro, JFK, Harding, B. Harrison, and A. Jackson. A quick glance seems to favor Vice Presidents. Then quite a few governors.
