**OFFICIAL** BASEBALL THREAD

Fair enough, but did he slide/dive head-first since his leg is injured...?

Perhaps he should have run through the play rather than slide headfirst into the bag, so the ump would have heard his foot hit the bag before the ball hit Reynolds' glove.

...and/or are you ready for a lot more instant replays in baseball?

Bravos won for the 4th time in a row tonight to get to 80-60 and a 6 game cushion in the WC race. I think we're in at this point, but I really hate the extra wild card!

Yep. The headfirst slide into first is designed to throw the ump off. Sometimes it goes your way, sometimes it doesn't.

I don't like that it's only a 1 game series. It should be a 3 game series if you were going to do that. It basically isn't even the playoffs even though you will technically be credited with making the playoffs if you lose that game. I think they should've expanded to 6 teams in each league make it and the top 2 get byes for the opening series (think NFL playoffs). Either that or expand it to 8 teams for each league.

If , I was managing , only advantage I see to one game, is , I can pull out all the stops with the pitching staff..... but yeah , I agree , one game is a bit tough after a season as long as they play ...

We are up three in the bottom of the 5th, we need this one to get three in a row , to make up for the three in a row we dropped before that . We get this that is 12 of 15.

I liked it better before the wildcard all together. I don't like when sports invite half (over half in the NBA) of the league into the postseason. I also don't like the play in way MLB has set this up. That's just me though; a bit of an old timer I guess.

Then destroy my rotation for the series that starts immediately after. It's a pain in the butt.

We won again today (81-60) to get to a 6.5 lead in the WC and 5.5 back in the division; now looks like a good time for the Nats to drop 7 of 10 or so!

A's win , did it with ,just two home runs , but I will take it , have given up , just four runs in the past three games ...

i think the wild card should have to fight it out tho. Look at the way the races are shaping up. To me this is probably the most exciting sept. in a while. At least now teams won't sit back and be content to take the wild card or just start resting players in the final month when it looks like they are on easy street.

Yeah haven't been around to comment on this but - umpires are trained to watch for the ball going into the glove and to LISTEN for the foot hitting the base, when manning first. If there is no sound, a lot of times you are going to get an "out" call. That's why the question of whether diving into first is faster or not is irrelevant - it throws off the umpire and negates any speed advantage it could possibly have.

Anyway, Nick Markakis is a huge loss for my Orioles. I'm not feeling great but hopefully we can be competitive against the Rays in the next series - if we take 2 of 3, we're in really good shape to make the playoffs.

Should be a good series between the Rays and O's. Rays are 100% healthy, the SP and BP look post season ready. With Longo back at 3rd, we've cut way down on errors. The big question mark is, will the rays bring the bats on the next road trip up the east coast, and more importantly, will they remember to bring them to every game.

Looks like the O's will be facing the middle of the rotation, if that is any consolation :p

vs the al east leading yanks and the al west leading rangers...

For the homestand, Rays pitchers posted a 2.21 ERA with 66 strikeouts and a .169 opponents batting average.

Rangers had no one in scoring position, 1st time since 2007....

I've always thought the MLB lets too few teams in the playoffs.

O's won Sat. but the NY player says:
({After watching replays that clearly showed his head-first slide beat the relay, Teixeira questioned the umpire crews' integrity.})

"Sometimes you wonder if the umpires are just trying to get out of there," said Teixeira, who had argued a strike three call in the eighth. "They don't want you to make a comeback. They want to go home because those were terrible calls. It is what it is. We are out there fighting. I'm out there playing on one leg. I wish it had gone my way."

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira

It's a real shame when calls don't go your way (ahem ahem Jeffrey Maier). The Yanks are a fascinating case in double-standard studies.

I'm saddened by the Markakis injury. I want to see the Orioles win the division. Screw the Yankees.

anyone except the Yanks or Sox. Hell i'd be happy to see Toronto win the AL East if the Rays couldn't do it.

Big series starting in a few between the Rays and the O's. Rays have been hammering the best teams lately. If the O's can't do it, it will be because the Rays can! Go Rays and just for a few days, Go Sox!

A's , hold off Angels in the Ninth for fifth straight win , ( actually , 14 of 17 , I think ) , 81 wins ! :)

Up next for us , the evil nemesis of E. Santana & J. Weaver , we must prevail !!
