NYtimes with more Paul coverage of HR 2605!

Huge!

This is huge.
Ron orchestrates another "coup" in his campaign.

Authoring this HR Bill is going to get a LOT of press and "bandwagoning" by Democrats NOT wanting their name left OFF of this bill....

especially after last night's debate.....

whoooooo---hooooooooooooooooooooooo! Huge!!!(did I already say that?)

randy:) :)

Well, the NYT in their other article did note that RP is a politician of prodigious abilities or words to that effect. In addition to overall merit of the bill, which is great, the political play is possibly brilliant - first, gets his name out their, draws in dems, shames fence sitting repubs & ties them to supporting a horrible war and a discredited administration, etc, etc.

With democrat support, and authored by a republican..what strikes me is...it might actually pass!!

The war this war goes over the next several months may determine Ron's chances. If we see something like this pass, Ron will get tons of publicity as the architect of this bill, and that means much-needed name recognition =)

Here's a copy of the bill

Sunset of Public Law 107-243 Act of 2007 (Introduced in House)

HR 2605 IH

110th CONGRESS

1st Session

H. R. 2605
To establish a sunset for the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Public Law 107-243).

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

June 7, 2007
Mr. PAUL (for himself, Mr. ABERCROMBIE, Mr. DUNCAN, Mr. JONES of North Carolina, Mr. DELAHUNT, Mr. GILCHREST, Mr. NEAL of Massachusetts, Mr. MEEHAN, Mr. MICHAUD, Ms. KAPTUR, Mr. ELLISON, and Mrs. BOYDA of Kansas) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A BILL
To establish a sunset for the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Public Law 107-243).

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the `Sunset of Public Law 107-243 Act of 2007'.

SEC. 2. SUNSET OF PUBLIC LAW 107-243.

The Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Public Law 107-243) is amended by adding at the end the following new section:

`SEC. 5. SUNSET.

`This joint resolution shall cease to be effective beginning 180 days after the date of the enactment of the Sunset of Public Law 107-243 Act of 2007.'.

SEC. 3. RULE OF CONSTRUCTION.

Nothing in the amendment made by section 2 of this Act shall be construed to prevent or prohibit Congress in the 180-day period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act from--

(1) reauthorizing Public Law 107-243, with or without amendment, as appropriate; and

(2) passing a new authorization for the use of military force against Iraq or a declaration of war against Iraq, as appropriate.

Weasel clause

I like the weasel clause:
Nothing in the amendment made by section 2 of this Act shall be construed to prevent or prohibit Congress in the 180-day period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act from--

(1) reauthorizing Public Law 107-243, with or without amendment, as appropriate; and

(2) passing a new authorization for the use of military force against Iraq or a declaration of war against Iraq, as appropriate.

Why?

Because it makes it EASIER to sign first off.
and second,
because, once in place, CONGRESS alone, would have to Re-Authorize the war!
What do you think the chances of THAT happening would be?

Brilliant!!!:)

this time he's a maverick conservative. way to go NYT!

No Doubt!

It's about time they started calling Ron Paul the Maverick instead of McCain.

McCain hasn't been a Maverick in a long long time...The last 4-5 years he's pretty much been nothing but a Bush-Neocon parroter especially on the War and Shamnesty.

I've been reading news, and watching MSNBC (home sick today), and I have noticed that RP has authored a bill to remove GWB's authority to wage war without Congressional Approval. IE..it's a back door to end the war.

It sounds like he's already got alot of support on the Democratic side.
That being said, if this bill passes, RON PAUL can tell EVERYONE he wrote the bill that ENDED THE WAR IN IRAQ!!!

Do you know how HUGE that is?!?!?

We need to assemble and email our congressmen/women and tell them to support his bill and END THIS WAR!

If he could state that he wrote the bill to end the war, it would be a HUGE boost to his Campaign!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH!! MAN!!! HUGE!!
WORDS.I.NOT.CAN.SAY.TOO.EXCITED!!!!

THis is getting huge press, Ron Paul doing what the democrats "mandate" could not... LOL democrats must be blushing that the way to end this war was never to cut funding.. BUT TO READ THE CONSTITUTION!!!!

If this bill passes. Bush will VETO IT!!! and ...

um..
wait...
??

It doesn't matter if Bush vetoes it, Ron Paul will still be seen as the architect of ending the war in iraq, and the only thing that stopped it was a stubborn veto by a president who has lost all credibility. (there was a recent poll where he had 25% approval, that is LOOOWWWW)

Even if he vetoes it, Congress can overrule with enough votes.

I sent an email to my representative Bobby Rush.

This is the best way for Ron Paul to make his name known, by doing the job he was elected to do in a way that will be supported by the majority of Americans.

The best part for me is knowing that he did this because it was the right thing to do. He wouldn't have done it just for the publicity. Sincerity, always wins me over.
