In November, the town will elect a mayor and two commissioners, seats now held by Mayor Vivian Jones and Commissioners Frank Drake and Margaret Stinnett.

Even from this distance, it appears Jones has a lock on the election for her third term. She ran unopposed four years ago, recycling her yard signs from the 2001 election, and she may do the same this time around.

This has upset me greatly. It's not that I have anything against Mayor Jones, but that she should run unopposed for mayor is a travesty of the democratic process. I detest few things more than getting a ballot with a position that has only one name.

Thus, after conferring with the Mrs last night, I have decided to file as a candidate for town mayor. I've been threatening to do this for 15 years and the article above just pushed me enough in that general direction.

I'd love to run a fun campaign... something slightly different and off center from a standard boring "Vote The Biss for Mayor", while incorporating policies of constitutionalism and libertarianism on a local level.

I have a couple grand stashed away that I could use to get started. And I work in a sign shop... so promotional materials are already taken care of. What I would like help with from fellow Ron Paulers is:

What would you like to see from a local campaign for mayor. As a libertarian, which platforms would be of most concern to you? What would catch your eye and make you more inclined to research those campaign platforms more in depth. What crosses over from a fun campaign to a full tilt gonzo campaign? Bear wrestling? Kangaroo boxing? Chicken dinner fundraisers where you go home with a live chicken?

My hope is to use this thread and a sister thread at GIM to document the whole process of running from now until November. Your input is very much appreciated.

In a local race, emphasize property rights, tax cutting, and cutting government waste. Explain how local land use laws and high taxes drive economic growth into other jurisdictions, and how decreasing regulation and taxes would benefit the community. Hammer away at how absurd some of the local laws are - as an example, in my local area, according to local laws, if you as so much as pick up a screwdriver or change a light bulb in your house without asking for permission from city hall (as in getting a building permit), you are in violation of the law - people are amazed to find out that they ARE criminals due to overly broad local ordinances. Once people are aware of how their everyday behavior has been criminalized, how their property rights have been taken away, and how their pockets are being picked to make this possible, then they start to get mad - then they start to think. Get a copy of all your local laws and ordinances. Is it illegal for a kid to have a lemonade stand or build a treehouse? Is it illegal to fix something in your house when it breaks? You get the idea. Then there is the issue of schools. How much per pupil is spent by the local school district? How does this compare to what private schools charge for tuition in the area? A proposal to completely absolish the school board and privatize the local school system by providing vouchers (baby steps, etc), complete with the numbers to show how much this would reduce the local budget and reduce property taxes, would certainly get some attention. Keep hammering away at how much economic growth could be had if the departments of planning, zoning, etc were eliminated at the same time that tax rates were reduced. While your opponent will probably be talking about the town's "need" to grab "our share" of "free" federal stimulus money, talk about how taking this money will result in higher federal taxes and less local freedom, and how the best thing to do in the long run is to refuse to take federal money.

While it is a good idea to do something to make your campaign fun and unique, you don't want to be seen as only running for comic relief and not taken seriously. Being labeled as a joke candidate by the local media would instantly kill your chances. Something to be fun and attention getting is always good, just be extremely careful that the idea is backfire-proofed.

Exactly!!! I can't stand those hitleresque nazi wannabes telling me how to build the steps off my back porch!!!

Not to mention them telling me how to run my business -- like no smoking in MY , I'll repeat, MY restaurant!

TMike

Edit: I don't actually own a restaurant... but if i did...:)

Mike, that's a point that grinds me... Im not a smoker, but dang... this decision to ban smoking from all restaurants in NC is a massive violation of personal freedoms and the decision making process.

I think if I were mayor, I would look into finding a way to direct our police force to turn a blind eye towards this infraction.

I know the feeling, I love how the state where I went to boarding school in Germany passed a no smoking law, with an opt-out clause for bars and pubs as long as they provide a non-smoking section. Although I'm even against that, at least they still have the choice to let people smoke, and the non-smoking section only needs to accommodate 1 patron :P

Oppose militarization of police-that is, allowing police to take on the job of Militas (i.e. immigration raids, drug raids, etc). Propose allowing private militias/security companies to take the jobs of inefficient police. Basically, show people the libertarian concepts of a privatized, efficient government. :) (make sure to do your homework, so people don't think you're nuts. They're probably used to living in the Statist womb)

Playing politics will never advance the cause of liberty, unfortunately.

I completely disagree, the only way we stand a chance is running candidates and getting into government to make changes. What good is it to our movement if we just stand on the sidelines?

I've begin unofficial campaigning.

It's weird when you introduce yourself, "I'm Dave Bissette, and I'm running for mayor..." how people will open up to you.

I had one guy want to talk with me today for 20 minutes about the problems he's experiencing with local government. I took notes. I'm going to have to get one of those pocket notepads with the plastic cover on it and keep it with me at all times.

Awesome!!! Good luck. :)

I went to a City Council meeting tonight and left very frustrated and disgusted. We desperately need liberty minded people to run.

Pretty solid web site. :)

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the area so I can't tell which issues to focus on.

thats actually a great website. good and orderly. im no expert however but as a standard webpage looker-atter i'd say thats pretty damn good!

How big is the town? Would it be possible to visit every house personally and talk to people? That's easily the best way to get support.

maybe off topic- we have a young county commissioner in our area who writes a monthly newsletter on the minutes of the meetings and then rings some door bells and hands them out or stuffs them in mailboxes.
