PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — A crowd of frightened shoppers trying to exit a department store after smoke seeped in from a nearby car fire knocked over a metal support frame, leading to mistaken reports of gunshots and the evacuation of the upscale mall, authorities said Sunday.

The panic at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus began shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday, when a car caught fire in a parking lot.

As smoke from the blaze entered the store, employees told customers to evacuate. The moving crowd knocked over a large metal display stanchion on the store's main level, causing a loud noise that many confused for gunshots.

Another display setup fell moments later as the frightened crowd rushed out of the store. Authorities say several mall patrons suffered minor injuries during the exodus.

The entire mall was evacuated after the reported gunshots.

State police and several other law enforcement agencies combed through the mall to investigate the shooting report but later determined no shots had been fired. The remaining locked-down stores were searched and cleared by midnight, police said.

Authorities are still investigating what caused the car to erupt into flames.

The mall's restaurants and theater were open Sunday. Its shops are regularly closed Sunday.

LMAO, good god man.

See what liberal laws passed in the heat of being scared do to people?

SMFH

as if I need to say this again..

Get your ass out of the cities..

Only enter one for necessary business and get out as fast as possible after.

Do not live there,, and do not allow yourself to be caught/trapped there.

I can't imagine living somewhere that an entire mall full of people don't know what real gunshots sound like.

I'll add;

Try your damnedest not to live within 100 miles of any city with a population over 100k.......

very poor HVAC system. (or technicians or management) the "make up air" should keep a slight positive pressure in the building.
this prevents "wild" or unconditioned air from entering the building. keeps oxygen levels up and CO2 down etc.

Lowest bidders gonna bid.

FWIW, that mall does have quite a history of weird things happening there (I think it's jynxed). From what I heard as well, it wasn't the metal fixtures that people thought were the gunshots, it was the exploding tires of the car (so they say)...

Also, it's not like everyone heard the noises - naturally it only takes one person to hear what they mistake as gunfire for it to trickle down and cause mass panic.

Last but not least, Paramus sucks and so does NJ.

actually, it was when smoking was banned. people started closing off the fresh air vents.
I was trained on those glass high rise building where no one can open a window. cigarette smoke is WAY down the list of airborne toxins.
formaldehyde was #1. (it is also that "new" car smell) fresh air is the ONLY solution.
buildings that are not kept at a positive pressure are dangerous. negative pressures will pull in sewer gas as an example.
ok, nobody asked for a lecture, I will stfu!

I thought they hailed from the "home of the brave" or maybe these sheeple are all Peter King's supporters.

Done, though last month they paved the last dirt road in my county. Soon it will be time to move again.

I was just thinking this morning about the freedom dirt roads provided me in the National Forest. We had so many safe places to pull aside and stop.

They say up in Alaska people wait for winter because it opens up where they can travel. Kind of hard to imagine.

I have yet to meet someone from there that's proud of that fact, lol.

When someone asks where you’re from and you proudly proclaim New Jersey, their reaction is always the same.

“Oh, you’re from New Jersey?”

anigif_enhanced-buzz-7611-1361483779-3.gif

“I was in New Jersey once. At the airport.”

anigif_enhanced-buzz-8398-1361483970-2.gif

It doesn’t matter if you tell them NJ is a great place to live…

anigif_enhanced-buzz-8762-1361484029-5.gif

…their opinion of the Garden State is pretty unwavering.
The reason why New Jerseyites don’t argue the point any further is pretty simple.

We are perfectly happy living here and we don’t need to convert you — there are already nearly 9 million people who call NJ home.
I mean, does your state make pizza slices as big as babies?

(Note: Two plates are required to support the deliciousness of this slice. And if you stick eight of ‘em together, it’s called a pie.)

I didn’t think so.

New Jersey is home to some of music’s biggest legends.

enhanced-buzz-23189-1361487971-9.jpg

Like Bruce Springsteen, the most American man to ever live.

enhanced-buzz-21970-1361488522-21.jpg

Or Whitney Houston, who had (has?) the voice of an angel.

enhanced-buzz-22977-1361488690-9.jpg

Or this guy. What’s his name again? Oh yeah, Frank Motherfugging Sinatra. Born and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey (the same place that baby-sized pizza came from).

Speaking of Sinatra, did you know it’s a scientific fact that New Jersey breeds the toughest sonsabitches around?

enhanced-buzz-23237-1361488821-6.jpg

Here’s a photo of Sinatra doing what he does best: not giving a fuck.

And here’s Joe Pesci, a Newark native, wearing a leather jacket in the middle of the summer in Ala-fuggin’-bama because he’s Joe Pesci.

Ice-T is also from Newark, and there was a time before Ice Loves Coco when he was considered to be a very tough guy.
This probably has something to do with the fact that NJ is home to one of the most dangerous cities in America: Camden.

So even though it’s sandwiched between New York City and Philadelphia, you’re more likely to get knifed right here in NJ! Impressive, no? Reeelax, we’re not all in the mob.

enhanced-buzz-5059-1361552762-1.jpg

Or are we?

anigif_enhanced-buzz-21919-1361552772-9.gif

New Jerseyites also have an unmatched sense of humor.

I mean, “Garden” State?
anigif_enhanced-buzz-24953-1361490117-0.gif

That was a trick. We ARE the Garden State. We earned that title by being so damn gardeny.
enhanced-buzz-26176-1361490604-5.jpg

New Jersey’s third biggest industry is agriculture (after kickin’ butts and takin’ names), and we have more horses than Kentucky. Ya hear that, Kentucky?

anigif_enhanced-buzz-26881-1361490838-1.gif

New Jersey is so awesome, New York sports teams are dying to play here.

enhanced-buzz-22754-1361491516-1.jpg

Ever hear of the New York Giants? Or the New York Jets? More like New Jersey Gigantic Fighter Jets, as they would be called if NJ had its way. Either way, their stadium is located in East Rutherford, NJ.
