Trump and Rand seem like the only candidates polling above 1% who are unaligned with the RNC. Do you think that this is the grand strategy? Does Trump stand with Rand? I don't think they have said anything bad about each other, so it just seems weird. Is Trump doing this just so Rand doesn't have to get his hands dirty in the primaries?

I think they need to band together for self-preservation. Nearly all the other debate attendees are RNC boys, with the exception being Carson and possibly Cruz.

Trump has said that he respects "some" of the other GOP candidates, but won't specify them by name. He attacks Jeb and Rubio all the time, and he's gotten in to a beef with Walker as well. The only "main" candidates I haven't heard him diss are Cruz and Paul. Would be nice if he is secretly backing Paul, but I'm thinking Trump prefers Cruz.

When informed that Trump is a hypocrite and has changed most of his positions and is just an opportunist, the response was "they're all crooked, I just want somebody who will give them hell, especially about immigration".

This voter knows most of the candidates, and is not a totally low information voter, but they also informed me that "Marco Rubio has been giving Mitch McConnell hell and had called McConnell a liar". They were not trusting of Cruz, as "he was a member of the gang of eight".

The precise mechanism by which Trump is sucking oxygen from Paul is the concentration of his verbal firepower against Bush, Rubio and Walker. While he is hilariously deflating these rivals, he is thereby giving them most of the residual media attention. This leaves less campaign coverage real estate available for Rand to work with.

Your average Democrat is no better.

The fact is that the average voter knows nearly nothing about the candidates and their positions. They are lucky if they can keep the mainstream media sound bites straight. Name recognition is probably the single most important factor. The media controls the narrative that way.

That's it. The average low information voter knows that he is a Bush, which to them means name recognition, status quo and comfort in a known commodity. Combine that with the establishment media, and it's a hard combination to defeat.
