Rand PAC 2016 launched Thursday as a new independent-expenditure-only committee, otherwise known as a Super PAC. But does it even support Rand Paul?

As reported on Roll Call:

The PAC website also does not say it is going to support Rand Paul in either a presidential or senatorial race in 2016.

The PAC is based in Hayward, California and its treasurer is Nick Nuckelt. The custodian of books is Brandon Edwards of Castro Valley, CA.

The new super PAC could also confuse many with its name and website address. The super PAC should not be confused with Rand Paul for U.S. Senate 2016, which is the principal campaign committee of the senator and has a website at www.randpaul2016.com. It should also not be confused with Sen. Rand Paul’s leadership PAC, Reinventing a New Direction – RandPAC, that has a website at www.randpac.com .

According to the conservative newspaper The Washington Examiner, Rand Paul is selling out his national speaking tour and those pre-existing PACs mentioned above already take in something like $12,500 a day—and that’s before any kind of official announcement of presidential intentions.

Like his father, former U.S. representative and presidential candidate Ron Paul, the younger Paul has proven popular with the more libertarian wing of the Republican Party and, to some extent, the conservative base that will ultimately choose the nominee. The elder Paul had no trouble raising money for his presidential campaigns, much of it from grass-roots supporters. In 2008, Ron Paul raised 39 percent of his campaign funds from small donors who gave less than $201. Barack Obama, during the same election cycle, raised 34 percent of his general election funds from small donors, and that figure was widely reported as something of a phenomenon.

Still, if Rand Paul decides to follow in his father’s footsteps and run, he’ll probably hope to win at least one primary or caucus, which Rep. Paul failed to do in either 2008 or 2012.

A new super PAC, Rand PAC 2016, registered Thursday at the Federal Election Commission as an independent-expenditure-only committee. The super PAC listed its website, but the site provides no names of sponsors or officers.

The website claims it is the “Official Rand PAC 2016 website.” It is unclear how a group can claim to be “official” when, as an independent expenditure committee presumably going to make independent expenditures supporting Rand Paul, it should not have any contact, coordination or connection with Sen. Rand Paul.

If this group is well-intentioned or if it is trying to siphon contributions away from Rand Paul’s campaign committee or leadership PAC, that same independent rule may hamper Sen. Rand Paul’s efforts to quell it or keep it from working at cross purposes to his campaign efforts.

Rand has a new presidential Super PAC.

Why does he need 2 PACs? Who are these people? That is confusingly similar and if they're not known to him he should get the FEC to block it

Hope you don't mind compromise but I split this off into a new thread... the video advertising Rand PAC and the new separate PAC "Rand PAC 2016" are 2 different things better not to be conflated with each other and probably deserving of their own threads.

No problem, sounds like a good decision.

This PAC calling itself "official RAND PAC" is likely a Democrat dirty trick.

Rand should lodge a complaint with the FEC!

I'm especially suspicious as the guy who's listed "likes" NBC, HuffPo and Occupy and is from California.

Go look up the names FR33 i just saw his likes on facebook and it's suspicious.

Why would Rand need 2 PACs and why would he call one "official Rand Pac" doesn't make any sense.

It's a socialist trick.

Looks really fishy now. But didn't Rand say he had a few guys in California working with his PAC and website a while back?

I think those guys are good guys and wouldn't call a PAC "official" when it's obviously not.

They already have a PAC anyway and post here

I could have sworn that I had posted a response in this thread. Is someone coming behind me and deleting my posts or did I just not post reply? I do so loath censorship so hopefully I just forgot to actually post up.

1. There are lots of libertarians in California.

2. Some major tea-party groups are run by professional Republican consultants from California

1) libertarians are unlikely to "like" NBC, HuffPo, and Occupy Wall St.

2) I'm aware of that co-opting but no idea why a professional consultant would register a Rand PAC to intentionally confused the masses. More likely a socialist dirty trick.

I'll try and find out what the story is, but usually takes me longer than others who lurk here.

After learning some information, I would *****NOT***** send a nickel to or support this group.

The whole Facebook likes thing is throwing flags for me. I mean if they are a group of liberals well...hell never mind it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Man I'm not one to speculate and assume stuff but life experience has taught me that liberal partisan types can and will do you dirty, straight up. These people are off the chain sometimes. You don't threaten their government cheese and make it out clean.

Just because they're from California hardly means they are liberals. Nick looks like someone from the mid-west, at first glance anyways.

Also, Where does it say official?

It looks legit to me.. RAND PAC is a PAC and RAND PAC 2016 is a SUPER PAC. How do we know that Rand doesn't know about who is behind it? Has he said anything?

I personally am withholding judgement until we learn more.

Why doesn't he pick another name? He's going to confuse it with the official one and that is going to be too suspicious for this particular Warlord. Plus why does he "Like" Occupy Wall St. and garbage like that?

If he wants to run a PAC he should pick a liberty name not one that is confusingly similar to Rand's or Rand Paul himself as he's going to dupe a lot of people even if he's a well intentioned supporter. I still think it's a dirty trick as his Facebook hardly screams liberty supporter and hope the mods investigate further if they're going to let him post here.

Human action (www.humanaction.com) is the other PAC ran out of California. They fully support Rand and other candidates but they dont claim to be him or intentionally confuse potential donors.
