New Blasphemy Law in Ireland

I don't know about cities in Ireland, but I know that London has laws against 'hurtful' speech. Religious nutcases need to stop imposing their bullshit on everyone else. Hell, Ireland should just pass a law banning anyone from saying that Santa Clause doesn't exist. Santa Clause and god both have the same amount of evidence to back up their existence anyways.

What you says hurts my feelings. Santa is real!!! BLASPHEMY!!!

I'm a Christian and I'd disagree but I'd like for you to have the right to say it.

This isn't new. All kinds of speech is illegal in Europe and has been for some time now. Many kinds of racist speech are illegal as well.

Why not? What about freedom of speech! Do you find it also right that the democratic majority can impose anything upon you in politics? Why do you find this then with religion? Start thinking for yourself, it might do some good.

If you read the entire thread you will see that your comment indicates your ignorance. Now let me hold you by the hand fattyJ, I did not say freedom of speech is a bad thing, but does it exist even in America? NO. You will go to jail for spreading hate, offending a religion etc.... so what I see is that Ireland is preventing the BS that exist today in the US with respect to offending anyone, hell people are scared *hitless to say holocaust in the wrong context or even question it, but then on the other-hand it is okay to deny the Armenian or Soviet holocaust without fear of prosecution, bashing, career loss etc etc.....So is there free speech in America? Yes/No it just depends where you are and who is around to hear or catch wind of what you said. You can't confuse the populace. Either you can speak your mind or you can't! AGAIN I see why Ireland has gone this route (but that doesn't mean i agree!) Get it?! Understanding and agreeing are two separate things.

Were the blasphemy laws actually ever repealed in England? I know, that in 1977, a gay editor was found guilty of libelous blasphemy and given a suspended sentence and fined.

The law is a problem for Buddhists because Buddhism rejects the notion of a personal God, the creator and ruler of the universe. It even goes so far as to state that the belief is detrimental to the spiritual and moral development of humanity. This can be painful to Christians and to people who believe that "all paths lead to the same place." But it can now be a crime in Ireland to state this as a Buddhist in Buddhist classes.
The concern is WHO decides what is blasphemous. If you have an individual who is disrespectful to somebody as a human being and that includes denigrating their religion, that is one matter, but there should never be a law against it.

But the matter of pointing out the first limb of the Noble Eightfold Path "Right View" which sees the problem of a Creator God, as a limit to spiritual development, especially if he is depicted in the believer's heart as some kind of Ivan the Terrible who could send him to eternal damnation for not believing vehemently enough or practicing carnal knowledge if he is a priest..... weeeell Buddhism does not see the negative emotions of fear and guilt as conducive to the cultivation of spiritual qualities.

Guess I'm just an old heretic.

A sovereign nation has the "right" to pass any law it wants. I just wouldn't want to live there. And I'm a Christian. Actually this law as written is ANTI Christian. Imagine a Christian evangelist preaching among a Hindu minority group saying "Your gods really didn't exist"? That's just as blasphemous to them as an atheist saying "Well your god doesn't exist either".

Nations don't have rights. That notion is contrary to the American tradition. People have rights and they grant the government privileges.

I dunno that I could ever say anything in Ireland.

I can barely say anything here.

It would be funky if it were a real medieval blasphemy law. Like lil` old Ireland sticking it up to the secularists and continuing on its provincial uber-catholic path!

Unofortunately the law is a bunch of liberal touchy feely PC-ness. It says "any religion" so the main point is that badmouthing of religions other than their own is banned. They want to avoid a Mohammed cartoons situation.

It would be kind of funny if lulzy types from all over the world spammed Irish websites with blasphemous comments and pictures. ;)

Ratzenberg is a nutjob bent on returning the catholic church to the middle ages.

Dope of a Pope and he's a kraut too.

Being Irish this bill has actually disgusted me and it just proves that our current Minister for Justice is terribly regressive!
