Neighbor issues

Alright. I'm fired up tonight and in moderate disagreement with my wife over the issue of our inconsiderate, rude neighbors.

Here's the scenario:

Our house and the offending neighbor's house are "mirror images" of one another, effectively "attached" at the garages in the middle. We "share" a common driveway with them, with the right half being "ours" and the left half being "theirs." On many, MANY occasions over the past five years, I've either come home to someone parked on our side, or someone parked smack in the middle (rendering our side unuseable), or - as is the case tonight - been parked in the driveway and have some dipshit park behind me, blocking me in.

My immediate desire upon seeing I was blocked tonight was to call the cops. Hers was to ignore it. Or "go over and talk to them."

I'm curious what RPF thinks I should be doing here. I kinda wanna make a poll but don't know how to.

He told her that he's told THEM countless times to knock that shit off, and they just don't care.

Fuck the cops. Call a tow truck.

Have it towed to a friendly property, then follow your State's procedure for claiming an abandoned vehicle.

I pushed a friend of mine to gain title to a 2002 a Sebring convertible in a similar way; although it was abandoned for 2 weeks after an eviction before he pursued it.

lol. sounds like you have my neighbors. i was threatened with being sued because i put up a fence about 3-4 feet INSIDE of my property line. this is after i gave them a 2 month heads up about it. i used to be a land surveyor for 8 years and i know first hand that most disputes happen over just the simple fact that people dont communicate even when there is no legal reason to anyway. so i just let em know what was coming up. they said they were fine with it that it was my land and to do whatever i wanted. i even showed them exactly where i was putting the corner posts and all was ok.

THEN after i put in the last post at the end of my driveway, the very next morning around 10am i see a cop car sitting in my drive. i thought the old lady was hurt or something so i waited until the cop left then went fishing. when i got back my other neighbor told me that they had called the cops on ME because i was making it to where they couldnt use MY drive to get to the back of their property. there is no right of way or easement in my deed. i didnt block them from getting to their home at all.

so when the 50yr old unemployed piece of crap came outside i asked him why the cops were there. he started trying to say that i was blocking him from the back of his property and didnt think it was right that he couldnt use my drive so he was now going to get the city inspector n me and sue me. thats was 2 months ago and nothing else has happened. i DID put up the fence anyway, because even after the fence was put up they still would pull down into our drive to park and blocked us in 2 times. so i put up a gate, (which i was going to do anyway for my daughter). but that has took care of it so far.

these people dont work EVER! they live off their old moms money from her dead husband. SHE has never worked.

but during telling them they were not going to be allowed to use MY drive, he started this "not everyone has a big yard like you", "not everyone has a 4 wheel drive" and "mom doesnt want to mess up the other side of our yard to get to the back"......

i just told him to sue me and id counter sue when he lost for missed work and lawyer fees. the stupid fucker just sits there all day yelling at his old mom. they sleep all day and stay up all night sitting in their damn car.

as far as advice to you goes, all i can tell you is try to get along if you can , but STAND YOUR GROUND and dont let people run over you. let them know youll bite if youre pushed to it. peace of mind is great, but ill be damned if ill lay down for someone especially if theyre a piece of shit.

Is it a "Y" drive (where you each have a branch of the "Y" but the stem is shared to get to the street)? If so, the gate that people suggested is your best bet. Close off your branch. As an added advantage, you can get your yard fenced in and looking nice as well.

Is it like the aforementioned "Y" but the stem is two cars wide? If so, try running a metal fence along between the two "lanes", or something similar. Then park as close to the end of your driveway as you safely can.

Is it actually parallel driveways and they are pulling into yours? Either of the aforementioned solutions would be good.

I would still try to talk to them at a time when you are NOT pissed off, and mention that it'd be great to share driveways on occasion (if they went out of town, you could park a car in their driveway so it looks like someone's home, and vice versa) but that you'd really like to have some forewarning.

It sure beats, you know, blowing up their car, throwing nails on the driveway, or slashing their tires.

There's an added bonus in that if you DO find some way to move out, your home will already have the fence or gate or other divider in place for the next person, and maybe they will be happier since they won't have this issue from the start.

Wins thread

Never call the cops.

Man up and pound on the door EVERY time they do it and make them move it. Eventually they will get the message. If they don't stop tell them the next time you will be moving it for them. Get yourself a chain, hook it to your truck and drag it out of the way.

Don't pay your underwater mortgage for a year or two, take the money you saved and buy a small simple place in the country with cash.

There must be some kind of written agreement or contract if you share a wall and a driveway.

There's is not, as far as I'm aware. Certainly nothing that I ever signed.

Also the driveway is NOT a "y" or something that splits. It's just a single, normal, suburban driveway wide enough for two vehicles side-by-side and long enough for several.

In any case, it now appears that one hoodlum kid will be away, possibly for quite awhile, and I'm thinking about throwing a party tonight in celebration of that fact.

Sorry for your troubles chudrockz. I've lived with a similar situation since 2007 -next-door market opportunists with firearms and little or no respect for our property. I don't have an issue with a market opportunist with firearms as long as they don't mess with me.:)

Did anyone mention a sign on your property visible from the street saying: "This is NOT the drug house/driveway half"

I haven't gone with the sign for my problem neighbors but I'd certainly do it if their traffic was an issue on my property or I was concerned with the wrong house being targeted by violent criminals.

Open communication with your neighbors (all neighbors) be they good or bad, signage, and *short and long term plans is the best advice I can give. Also, your neighbors may not now or ever respect your property but do whatever it takes for them to respect yourself and especially what you are capable of.

*Short term plan like a nightmare home invasion scenario, a show of force, etc. and a long term plan like moving, driveway improvements, etc.

It's another liberty-rubber meets the road moment -hang in there. MOAR liberty is ALWAYS the right answer. Good luck.:)

I can recall back in the '90s sometime when I was first getting into Libertarianism, and a constant refrain was something like this:

"Look, freedom's all good and great for me and such, but have you met my neighbors?" Now I know exactly what that's about.

I would actually LOVE to live out in the country, and we are looking into that. However, in our neck of the woods a constant problem (for six months or so out of the year anyway) is not being able to make it to work (or being able to make it work with difficulty) because of snow. The country highways in southern Minnesota get REALLY bad really quick. I like my current seven minute in-town commute, when everyone else that's coming from twenty five miles away either calls in, comes in late, and when they make it go "OMG! My Twenty minute drive just took an hour and a half!"

Yeah, that could work. I've never actually been on a snowmobile (or a motorcycle, either, for that matter) and only once or twice on an ATV. But lots of people around here love the things. I'm not sure though. I know (and know of) quite a few around here who wreck on them, and to various degrees get banged up temporarily or permanently.

A person can wreck in the bathroom...

Personal responsibility is a great thing...

So's playing..;)

Clumsy bastards like ME *have* wrecked in the bathroom!! Something like ten years ago I was getting into the shower and I slipped, bringing my shin crashing light speed straight into the faucet head thingy. I hit it so hard it dented the BONE, and my whole leg up to the knee turned black! Went to the doc and had to wear a compression "sleeve" thing for like two weeks. Had a few choice words to say at the time of that incident.
