Need the top five "challenge authority" quotes of all time... READY SET GO!

check out my sig, bro-"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

"It is an enormous simplification to speak of the American mind. Every American has his own mind." -Mises

"to swim against the stream is fun in any case; in a conformist age, it is a duty"
- Nietzsche

I kind of live by this quote:

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.

But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

-Buddha

Gee I didn't have anything as high handed as you guys did. I reverted to some warmed over stuff from the 60's:

Kiss off pig.

Tune in, turn on, drop out.

Stick it to the man.

Fuck the system.

Ban the bra.

a government which cannot preserve the peace, is no government at all, and in that case we pay our money for nothing
-thomas paine, Common Sense

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."
Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels (Adolph Hitler's propaganda minister)

"Loyalty to the country always. Loyalty to the government when it deserves it." -Mark Twain

The majority is never right. Never. That's one of those social myths that every free and intelligent man must fight. Who are the majority in a country, anyway, the wise or the foolish? Why, the fools are! They have an overwhelming majority the world over! But I'll be damned if it then follows that they should govern the intelligent people!
- Henrik Ibsen, "An Enemy of the People", 1882

A majority are permitted ... to rule ... not because they are most likely to be in the right ... but because they are physically the strongest
- Henry David Thoreau

an unjust law is a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority to obey but does not make binding in itself
-Martin Luther King Jr.

I would be the to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that "an unjust law is no law at all"
_ Martin Luther King Jr.

I submit that an individual who breaks a law that consience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law. Of course there is nothing new about this kind of civil disobedience... It was practiced superbly by the early Christians, who were willing to face hungry lions and the excruciating pain of chopping blocks rather than submit to certain unjust laws of the Roman Empire... In our own nation, the Boston Tea Party represented a massive act of civil disobedience
- Martin Luther King Jr.

When we show the government that we will not protest its abuses of the natural law and will allow it to trample our freedoms just because there is a war being waged, we create an incentive for the government to go to war. Our complacency creates a perpetual cycle: The government wages wars in our names, and we relinquish more of our rights in the name of safety
-Judge Andrew Napolitano

"The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made."
— Groucho Marx

"Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies."
— Groucho Marx

I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it - Dwight D. Eisenhower

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion.
~ Oscar Wilde

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.
~ Frederick Douglass, escaped slave

In matters of conscience, the law of majority has no place.
~ Mohandas Gandhi

Insanity in individuals is something rare; but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs it is the rule.
~ Nietzsche

Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty. The obedient must be slaves.
~ Henry David Thoreau

Everyone likes to say Hitler did this and Hitler did that. But the truth is Hitler did very little. He was a world class asshole, but the evil actually done, from the death camps to World War Two, was all done by citizens who were afraid to question if what they were told by their government was the truth or not, and who because they did not want to admit to themselves that they were afraid to question the government, refused to see the truth behind the Reichstag Fire, refused to see the invasion by Poland was a staged fake, and followed Hitler into national disaster.
~ Michael Rivero

Usually when people are sad, they don't do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change.
~ Malcolm X

Most of the things worth doing in the world had been declared impossible before they were done.
~ Louis Brandeis

"Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president...."
-Theodore Roosevelt

"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." … Samuel Adams

a nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves. -Edward R. Murrow

I like this one, for mentioning the many aspects
and "results" of losing control,...

"The very word 'secrecy'
is repugnant in a free
and open society;

and we are as a people
inherently, and historically
opposed, to secret societies,
to secret oaths, and to secret
proceedings.

We decided long ago, that the
dangers of excessive and
unwarranted concealment of
pertinent facts, far outweighed
the dangers which are cited
to justify it
"

- John F. Kennedy

I like to use this one, when I hear
someone spouting-off that democracy
is our current form of government,
and that it's a great thing for humanity, etc....

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule
where fifty-one percent of the people may take away
the rights of the other forty-nine.

-Thomas Jefferson

Speaking the truth means:
a willingness to say what one believes,
defend it with facts,

when provided with new information.
