Charlotte, NC - Liberty candidate and Ron Paul RNC delegate USMC Sergeant Matthew Ridenhour won the GOP runoff for Mecklenburg County Commission district 5 tonight against his establishment rival Sarah Cherne. District 5 is a heavily Republican leaning district and Ridenhour is all but certain to be elected in November, becoming one of the only liberty candidates to hold public office in the state of North Carolina.

Ridenhour was outspent in the primary and runoff $35,000 to $15,000 but was able to pull out the win with grassroots muscle and support from local activists, the tea party and the NC liberty movement. Charlotte is serving as the host city to the Democratic National Convention this summer and Ridenhour's candidacy will serve as a shot across the bow of the Democratic party and a strong counter balance to the policies of Barack Obama. Earlier this year, Ridenhour was elected as one of the 7 bound Ron Paul delegates from North Carolina representing Ron Paul in Tampa at the Republican National Convention.

Matt will need your support going into the Nov 6 election. He's the real deal and I worked, along with a coalition of Paulites, establishment Republicans, I's, and everyone else to win his primary and run-off today. Can I toot my horn and claim a little direct credit? Yep I will. DON'T FUCK WITH PAULITES!!!!!!!! WE WILL BEAT YOU HACKS EVEN WHEN YOU SPEND THREE TIMES AS MUCH MONEY!!!!!!!

ahem....I digress.

This man is the real deal and has a future as a leader in this movement. Check out his website and donate if you can't help directly in Charlotte.

He's about to be part of my sig and replace the RP2012 link.

The really exciting part about this candidate and this race is that Matthew did not start out his political involvement as a Ron Paul Republican. He returned from his tour of duty in Iraq and joined the local Young Republicans, then started the Charlotte Tea Party organization, which is one of the non-Paul Tea Party groups in NC. I first met him in 2009, and he was one of your typical activists who is with us on fiscal issues, but still believed in a basically neo-con foreign policy. He and I had many discussions over the ensuing years, sometimes disagreeing strongly. As the presidential race cranked up last fall, he found most of the candidates not to his liking, and particularly disliked Santorum and Gingrich. I got an interesting email from him back in late December/early January asking me if he remembered correctly when Ron Paul said that bin Laden had written about the specific reasons he attacked us, and that they had to do with our foreign policy. I told him he was right and directed him to the appropriate reading materials.

It wasn't long after that that he publicly announced that he would be supporting and voting for Ron Paul. I approached him about running as a National Ron Paul Delegate, and he agreed. It wasn't long after that that he announced he would run for Mecklenburg County Commissioner. When he did, I reminded him about his agreement to run for National Delegate, and he reaffirmed his commitment to do so, even though he knew that declaring for Ron Paul would cost him support from establishment Republicans for his County Commissioner race.

The local Liberty Movement and Tea Party activists joined forces to make up the difference, and won his nomination for National Delegate in April by 2 votes, then won the GOP Primary in May by 200 votes, then won the Primary Runoff last night by 750 votes.

Matthew spent 3 years making a name for himself as a non-Paul Tea Party leader, then was converted to a Ron Paul Republican. Only by doing things in that order were we able to put together a large enough base of support to out-muscle the forces of the local GOP establishment, which, as Devil21 pointed out, out-fundraised Matthew by 3-to-1.

I love to hear stories about people waking up.

Ridenhour *should* be the favored candidate in the general election. Republicans are strong in his district and it's been held by R's for decades. But it is an Obama year, and he's leaving nothing to chance, continuing to walk the district and lock down votes. One of the other 'R' districts in the northern end of Mecklenburg county almost flipped in 2008, which spooked the local GOP a bit.

Ridenhour is making his final fundraising push for mailings this Tuesday. You out-of-stater's can donate too of course! :)

Here is Matthew's speech at Charlotte's recent End the Fed protest. He talks about how he was converted and became a member of the Liberty Movement.
