The Government Cost Calculator is a unique service from The Independent Institute that enables any American to clearly understand three aspects of federal government spending. First, the Government Cost Calculator helps you determine how much you will pay for various federal programs now and over the course of a lifetime. Second, it compares those tax payments to the forgone earnings that would have been possible if such funds were kept and invested in private market accounts. Finally, the Government Cost Calculator enables you to see the difference between government expenditures and your tax payments, clearly illustrating the growing debt obligations you face in the future.

Unlike total or “per capita” government debt calculators currently available, the Government Cost Calculator personalizes government spending, enabling you to see how much federal programs are costing you now and how much they will cost you in the future. Simply input your age, education level, and income to immediately see the dollar amount of your federal tax payments. You can choose to view your total lifetime federal tax payments or narrow the results according to those areas that concern you most, such as national defense, farm subsidies, or Social Security.

Future taxes will cost you $269,721
If privately invested, you could have earned $1,480,534

Huh. A million would be nice. Instead I get the satisfaction of knowing that I've helped all the little people by giving my earnings to a racket so I didn't get sent to prison for tax evasion.

Assholes.

what does "privately invested" mean?

can't find it on the methodology page.
What does “typical investment scenario” mean?

The typical scenario assumes the stock market earns the same average return as it has since 1871. This percentage return thus adjusts for highs and lows in the stock market and also assumes full reinvestment of dividends. The stock market figures are corrected for inflation, are given in present-day dollars, and do not include the effects of fees, taxes, or other transaction costs.
