"Normal is the average insanity of the mass." -- R.D. Laing
And my older sister who has always been the most financially successful and the smartest in the family, shocked me to no end when she said, "Oh, THEY will NEVER let that happen..." (crash, boom, bust, martial law, financial collapse, or whatever... she -- the SMART ONE -- thinks "THEY" will NEVER let it happen! Arrrggghhh. Total EXASPERATION).
I can understand you wanting to move to gold, etc... but why are people so keen on stocking up for food as if its Y2K/end of the world all over again? Do you seriously think there's going to be some kind of food shortage? Maybe sometime in the next few decades, but i highly doubt it'll have anything to do with this current recession. Its one thing to hunker down, try to protect your wealth, etc... its an entirely different thing to act as if the world is about to collapse and widespread famine is imminent. I don't blame spouses for thinking someone is insane if they are acting in this manner.

It is conceivable that there could be riots and a breakdown of law and order. Perhaps more likely, would be for the government to set up price controls on food after inflation goes nuts. With price controls, food shortages cannot be far behind.
