So far what I am able to glean from news sources

- 9 dead
- Suspect said to be a 21-year-old white male (age is probably an estimate, there is no ID on shooter yet)
- There was possibly a "Black Lives Matter" meeting going on
- Tonight was the start of Ramadan so don't be surprised if the "white male" turns out to be not quite so white
- Suspect said to be wearing a gray sweatshirt, which I find extremely odd given how hot and humid it is down here even at midnight - we've been getting into the high-90s and that is expected to continue for more than another week

- The Reverend of this church is also a SC State Senator, name Clementa Pickney (he is male despite the female-sounding first name)
- Pickney and his sister are rumored to be two of the nine dead

open seat but probably a 90% black Dem district. might be an opportunity in a primary as it will likely be a multi candidate primary; and then you get a seat pretty much for life.

Media is already reporting it as "hate crime" though initial judgements are not always right.
Headlines seem to suggest that racial divide has increased in America in recent years despite the initial unity euphoria following Obama election. Number of headlines about police shootings involving African American victims and scandals involving African American athletes/celeberities have spiked in last few years compared to such headlines during Bush presidency. Would be interesting to know if change is just media coverage or facts on the ground as well as some sort of subconscious or conscious reaction following this major optics change relating to WH occupants. Underlying question being - is a wide spread antipathy among White Americans towards Obama contributing to increase in such headlines? At the same time Obama and democrat aligned media's role in selectively using some incidences to escalare racial tensions for political agendas is also quite evident.
