COLOMBO: Sri Lankan police are holding a Syrian national in custody for questioning over the Easter Sunday attacks on churches and hotels, three government and military sources told Reuters on Tuesday (Apr 23).
"The terrorist investigation division of the police arrested a Syrian national following the attacks for interrogation," a source said. Two other officials with knowledge of the investigation confirmed the detention. "He was arrested after interrogation of local suspects," a second source said.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday that killed more than 320 people. Meanwhile, a Sri Lanka government minister said they were in direct response to the mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand last month. Sri Lankan Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardene told the country’s parliament Tuesday that investigations had shown “this attack was carried out in retaliation for the attack against Muslims in Christchurch,” according to The Guardian. An intelligence memo handed to government officials weeks before the attack shows that one suspect in the bombings updated his social-media accounts “with extremist content” after a right-wing extremist killed 50 Muslim worshippers in Christchurch. Separately, ISIS claimed responsibility Tuesday for the attacks in Sri Lanka, saying via its own news agency that the “perpetrators of the attack... were Islamic State fighters.” The release also claimed the bombings targeted Christians as well as citizens of countries belonging to the coalition fighting ISIS.

During a televised speech to the nation Tuesday night, President Maithripala Sirisena said he would change the head of the defense forces within 24 hours, and on Wednesday he asked for the resignations of the defense secretary and national police chief in a dramatic internal shake-up. He did not say who would replace them.
Sirisena said he had been kept in the dark on the intelligence about the planned attacks and vowed to "take stern action" against officials who failed to share it.


Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe edged away from comments made by his state minister of defense that the bombings were carried out in apparent retaliation for the March 15 mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, that killed 50 people. He told reporters Wednesday that the mosque attack may have been a motivation for the bombings, but that there was no direct evidence of that.

The bodies of 15 people, including six children, were discovered at the site of a fierce overnight gun battle on the east coast of Sri Lanka, a military spokesman said on Saturday, six days after suicide bombers killed more than 250 people.The shootout between troops and suspected Islamist militants erupted on Friday evening in Sainthamaruthu in Ampara, to the south of the town of Batticaloa, site of one of the Easter Sunday blasts at three churches and four luxury hotels.
A police spokesman said that three suspected suicide bombers were among the 15 dead after the shoot out.
One child caught in the crossfire was admitted to hospital.
Military spokesman Sumith Atapattu said in a statement that as troops headed towards the safe house three explosions were triggered and gunfire began.
"Troops retaliated and raided the safe house where a large cache of explosives had been stored," he said in a statement.
He said the militants were suspected members of the domestic Islamist group National Towheed Jama'at (NTJ), which has been blamed for last Sunday's attacks.
Bomb-making materials, dozens of gelignite sticks and thousands of metal balls were found in a search of a separate house in the same area, the military said.

To me the supposed “suicide vest factory” looks like a Waco kind of mass murder, with 6 children dead; or another fake story to justify Sri Lanka’s “Patriot Act”.

Some could argue that this new “Counter Terrorism Act” (CTA) makes it all the more likely that the mass murders were really just another false flag terror attack.
The CTA bill defines terrorism as:

wrongfully or unlawfully compelling the government of Sri Lanka, or any other government, or an international organization, to do or to abstain from doing any act; …
obstructing essential services; …
[or] causing serious damage to public or private property.

This is so vague that it could easily be used to target any kind of protests against the government.

The CTA also includes violations of free speech as it states that it is a terror offense to “intentionally and unlawfully distributing or otherwise making available any information to the public, having intent to incite the commission of the offence of terrorism”.
It labels as “terrorists” those who “gather confidential information” in an “unauthorized manner … for the purpose of supplying such information to a person who commits an offence under this act”.

According to a Sunday report, Sri Lanka has banned all types of face coverings – including the Muslim Burqa traditionally worn by females – after last week’s Easter terror attacks that killed more than 300 people.
“The decision to ban all types of burqas and face covers was approved by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena after several bombs ripped through the island nation on April 21,” according to India Today.
The island nation announced the ban via press release.
“Any form of face covering that will hinder the identification of a person is banned under emergency regulations,” the release said. “A decision has been taken by the president to ban all forms of face covering that will hinder easy identification under emergency regulations.”


Sirisena called the garment “a security risk and a flag of fundamentalism.” At least one female suicide bomber blew herself up, killing her two children and three police officers in connection with the terror attacks, as police raided her home. Her husband and brother-in-law each carried out a suicide attack.

Already on 4 April, India warned Sri Lankans about Zaharan planning suicide attacks.
One of the suicide bombers was arrested a few months ago.

As early as April 4, the Indians provided the Sri Lankans with cellphone numbers and information about Mr. Zaharan and his lieutenants who they said were planning suicide attacks on Catholic churches and the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka, several Sri Lankan and Indian officials said.

One of the suicide bombers had even been arrested just a few months ago, Sri Lankan officials disclosed on Monday, on suspicion of having vandalized a statue of Buddha, an inflammatory act in a Buddhist-majority nation where strident religiosity, on all sides, seems to be increasing.
