MSNBC discussion of Rand Paul's minority outreach efforts

so they say the effort of outreach to blacks is actually an attempt to draw in white moderates.. lol.. don't know how they came to that one

Keep painting him as the nominee. It will only help us. No intellectual takes MSNBC seriously other than Chris Matthews maybe.

I can't see how his outreach efforts wouldn't increase his popularity with black voters but ... at the same time, I think that attracting white voters who feel outreach is important is a significant part of it.
Not the entire motivation, but a factor.
 
The first interview had a few good observations but the second was stupid. Who is the old black guy who said he'd been watching the GOP for decades and they're ALL hostile to black interests?

Decades ... 20 years or more ... I find that hard to believe the dem party has always been the saints on the issue. Very hard to believe.
That dude is probably old enough to remember otherwise.
 
If you want evidence that this strategy simply isn't going to work at all, just start watching at the 6:27 mark. These people aren't going to support him no matter how far to the left he moves on voter I.D laws and other issues.

That is evidence, yes, but keep in mind what station is airing the show. Its MSNBC.
Rand's always been pretty upfront in saying that he didn't think they could win the majority of the black vote, just double their support or so from 10% to 20%.

I think that is possible, even if MSNBC brings on the hacks they do.


-- but I agree with you about the voting rights issue. ID needs to be required and there is NOTHING racist in saying that. I wish Rand would make that point in his outreach tour. But then again, he never said he was against it. Just that it needs to be toned down. Perhaps he believes all the arguments could be made later on a be better received? I don't know.

Yeah, it's just hard for me to believe that he would actually pander on an issue like voter I.D. Not showing a voter I.D at the polls is so ridiculous that if a member of your family dies, and if you lived in a big city where the poll workers didn't know you, you could just go to the polling booth and give the name of the member of your family who just died. Then you could come back later on election day where there would likely be different people working there, and you could vote again using your real name. There's absolutely no way to prevent voter fraud without producing a photo I.D. Having fair elections is more important than anything else. Liberty candidates aren't ever going to win elections if you have some kind of concerted effort on the part of the establishment bringing out thousands of dead people to vote.
 
The GOP pulling 20% of the black vote upends electoral math all across the country. We don't need to also win over professional Obama propagandists.

That's a good point, or perhaps he spoke with a black pastor who said, will you please tell the GOP that I can't make inroads with people who are otherwise sympathetic to conservative ideals because of this issue. And maybe Rand cares about real world interactions with people enough that he said he would. Speculation, but one possibility that shows jumping to conclusions is not logical.
 
Yeah, I don't really agree with that channel often, but they have a point...talk the talk, and walk the walk. I see Rand make progress with Mandatory Minimums and Voter restoration rights but I want to see him do something about VoterID too if that's how he feels. I'm black and for voter ID, I believe the argument can be made without bringing up race once but it's also not a deal breaker for me at this point in regards to 2016. It also should not be a main point in his campaign either BUT, changing delivery of a message is one thing, creating or removing legislation associated with your message...is another.

It's a state issue under the Constitution. He's not going to introduce legislation regarding the issue when it's an issue that that states have jurisdiction over under the 10th amendment.

Then everyone on that shows argument is made invalid. It seems to me that a LOT of people over on the left have successfully blinded the significance of a state vs. federal issue and more importantly, the constitution altogether.
 
The political game people continually see things from a political game perspective. Rand Paul is a serious guy who is in politics, and I don't think he's above doing ethical things that it takes to win an important position, but I also think it's silly to assume he's not just reaching out to various groups and relaying concerns. We need more interest in politics, and debate on the issues. We don't need talking heads acting as though anyone on the other party who makes inroads with their party is the craftiest of crafty shysters. We need honest people in both parties to find out what they agree upon.
