Minority men falling behind academically, study finds

The government schools have failed. Abolish them. The national policy of institutionalized "positive" racism (affirmative action and Title 7) has failed. Abolish it. The drug war has failed. Abolish it. The "war on poverty" has failed. Abolish it.

Take responsibility INDIVIDUALLY. Through charity, through education, through love. That is the only policy that has ever worked.

+a zillion IOU 1 +rep-I'm out right now. :(

• 28% of African American men and 16% of Latino men aged 25 to 34 had obtained an associate's degree or higher, compared with 70% of Asian American men and 44%of white men.

I guess Asians aren't a minority.

Oops. Sounds like white people are falling behind.

we put in sooooo much money towards education compared to what they were using in the past. all they ever want is more, more, more money. state of the art this and that, new this and that, nice football fields-those things don't matter when it comes to making children successful.
what really matters are these things:
1. quality and worthwhile subject matter.
2. the childs willingness to learn.
3. parents pressure to be successful.

"As our nation becomes more diverse, it's going to become very important that these young men reach the same success that everyone else does," said the report's author, John Michael Lee Jr., policy director of the Advocacy & Policy Center.

How Orwellian.

The stats show the Asian population has used our education system to their advantage, and Blacks/Latinos have not (and Whites aren't that far ahead of them).

So, it is what it is. More money isn't going to change things.

Exactly. But heaven help anyone calling upon the community of lifelong professional victims to be responsible for their own destinies. A capital offense in the eyes of some.

Indeed. Perhaps there needs to be a Department Of Fairness to disable Asians and Caucasians so everything will be fair and square. /sarcasm

I agree 100%. I moved around enough and saw enough diversity to see this first hand. The Asian kid comes home with a B and their parents are furious. The black kid quits going to school and the parents don't know or don't care. I'm generalizing but I've seen this play out multiple times.

It isn't money, or facilities, genetics, or even teachers. It's the fucking parents. Parents who give a shit have successful kids. Parents who don't give a shit have kids in prison. That's the way the world works. And nothing the government or the schools do will change that.

I disagree here. The government created this, and they would help a lot if they get out of the way. The government destroyed black families. Before welfare, most black kids grew up having two parents.

Having grown up in NYC and having lived in at least 11 states, I can confirm this experience. I was a teacher at a NYC "magnet" school (Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics). As you note, there were exceptions, but in general the white and Puerto Rican parents were on their kids like stink on rice, whereas the black ones were not. In one instance, when I told a female student to put her ass in her chair, stop distracting the class, and do her work, her grandmother came in not to ask about her performance but to ream me a new one for "cursing" at her ward. By the time I was done with her, I was about 1/16th inch from throwing her manky carcass out the third floor window. I made it clear that I would no longer engage in any activity to help ensure that the little darling did not become a 121st street crack ho' like mommy.

Contrasting that, one day Ramon N. called me a "pecker head" before the entire class - all in misguided good humor. He was one of my best and brightest. I got a colleague to watch the class while I called mama. In under 10 minutes mamacita appeared at my classroom door, zeroed in on po' po' Ramon, and bitch-slapped him from one end of the room to the other. I stood by with my jaw in my balls as she smacked the crap out of him going on a minute or more, swearing like a sailor the whole while. All I'd asked of her was to have a word with her son - never expected what I got and would have done the job myself had I known what lay ahead for him. It was pretty bad for a 15 year old hispanic boy to be whipped by a woman in front of his friends like that. Ramon and I got along famously thereafter.

Those two examples more or less nutshell the statistical reality of my experience as a teacher.

It isn't money, or facilities, genetics, or even teachers. It's the fucking parents. Parents who give a shit have successful kids. Parents who don't give a shit have kids in prison. That's the way the world works. And nothing the government or the schools do will change that.

Well stated. Dead on.

"Government" created nothing. It is the same as saying "a concept created this". Utterly nonsensical. PEOPLE are responsible - in this case one set against all the rest.

School vouchers are needed. It worked in DC. Blacks were starting to do well in school. But what did the government do? They stopped the program. Basically saying "back to the ghetto for you".

Ha ha, like this guy who got a BA in physics in 1 year so he did not waste his parent's money. What the article does not say is that the school tried to prevent him from graduating.

The government schools suck. But somehow poor Asians who can barely speak the language come here and half their kids end up at Stanford and MIT. Same schools. Different parents.

And it's not genetics as racists would say. I know plenty of Asians and I'd stack my IQ against any of them. It's a culture that values hard work is the bottom line.
