Milk called best exercise drink

I drink a ton of milk in protein shakes. It has helped me tremendously. I have leaned up, toned up, strengthened up, etc. A protein shake for breakfast is also really awesome for me because I don't have me to make breakfast but can make and chug a protein shake in about a minute.

Milk rules.

Milk has two types of quality protein, whey and casein. Whey is broken down fairly quickly while casein stays in your system longer, like a time-release muscle builder. That's why it's more effective than whey supplements alone. It also contains lactose, which triggers an insulin release (like any carb or sugar) to drive protein into muscles. Lactose isn't particularly good at raising blood sugar levels, so supplementing with another type is optimal.

I did not read that whole thing, but I never drink milk. It is gross and it is not good for you.

I used to feel the same way until I read about raw milk and tried some. Really, I hated milk until I had some good raw milk. It's delicious AND good for you. http://www.raw-milk-facts.com/

It's not like you're going to die from not having it, because you're obviously getting the nutrients you need from other sources, but if you ever get the chance to try some good raw milk, I'd highly recommend it. Just make sure it's from an organic, grass-fed, healthy cow... otherwise I wouldn't drink it, pasteurized or not.

Something about drinking another animal's breast milk is unappealing to me.:p

Not as bad as where most hot dogs come from, or chicken nuggets, or scariest of all... the McRib.

At the age of 2, we lose the digestive enzymes to break down milk. Milk puts a lot of strain on the digestive tract and you cannot obtain any Calcium from milk. There are too many things in milk inhibiting you from absorbing the calcium.

And as others said, milk is acid-forming in the body. It may be basic, but as the body tries to break it down, it creates an acid environment.

And cancer thrives in an acidic system.

I wouldn't trust advice from a 25 year old. Sorry. I'm 26 and all my advice comes from a certified nutritionist who's been practicing for over 30 years.

I just wish I wasnt lactose intolerant, exercise drink or not, do you know how much food has milk in it?

What do you mean "we?" Plenty of "us" don't. Adult lactase production is well-documented. Also, raw milk contains lactase-producing bacteria, so it's better tolerated even by people who don't produce lactase themselves.

If your 30-years-experienced nutritionist doesn't know this, I don't think I'll bother listening to them because they probably only speak truth by coincidence.

The idea of downing some milk during a work out is off-putting to me. Just doesn't sound very appealing.

I'll drink my propel or some classic gatorade and be happy.

Lactose is a sugar not a protein. There is another type of milk intolerance that gives them problems with the caseine protein in the milk. Raw milk contains all the necessary enzymes to aid digestion of the caseine and lactose even in those that are considered intolerant.

You will want to drink milk after a workout. During may make you heave. I prefer chocolate milk after a workout.

really? I thought lactose intolerance was caused by the body's reactions to the proteins in milk. I don't know how drinking raw milk could change this. Please explain.

Milk contains enzymes that break down lactose, but pasteurization destroys these enzymes.

Another thing is that sometimes people think they're lactose intolerant, when it's actually an allergic reaction to the drugs used to keep the unhealthy cows giving massive amounts of milk. For example, some people are allergic to sulpha drugs, which are commonly used to treat infections and they contaminate the milk supply. Even though it's just trace amounts, people can have allergic reactions to it. Raw milk from a healthy cow... no problem.

I prefer to mix my protein powder in water. Tastes fine, and no drinking of cow's breast milk.:D

Agree with this. I like milk, honestly (I'm surprised so many people here don't care for it!), but I wouldn't drink it on a hot day or after a workout, just as I wouldn't drink it if I had strep throat or dry mouth or something along those lines.
