(CNN) – Three sources close to Republican Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana tell CNN they are told he will announce he is not running for president in 2012 and will instead begin exploring a run for governor.

These sources say he has been flattered by the efforts to nudge him into the GOP presidential race but, as one of the sources put it, "he is a realist and kept coming back to questions about the fund-raising." The second source said some around Pence also have reminded him of the difficulty of mounting a presidential campaign from the House, and noted that, at age 51, he would have a better platform to explore a presidential run if he first was elected governor.

He's taking the standard path. After a term or two as governor, he'll be back...

his quixotic bid ends before it even begins

RP 2012 !!!

+ rep!

I never expected Pence to run for prez;

The media did, putting him in polls when he hadn't even stated intent while excluding Ron Paul. Now they'll have to pick another person without national name recognition to put a tier ahead of RP.

This is good news for Ron Paul. Pence had small-government cred after breaking with Bush on (some) key big-government votes, including the bailouts. Pence - at least economically - will be a good governor for Indiana. And, besides, I like keeping the "neocons" at the state level where they cannot affect foreign policy.

And apparently Huntsman is definitely getting in, so that's good for RP, because Huntsman is a mormon moderate, so he will basically only draw from Romney.

Dick Armey is going to be really disppointed. He was going on and on about how great Pence is this morning on Fox.

Wow. Great news! Pence will be a good fiscally conservative governor in Indiana. This is a good thing. It is a good thing for us too because Pence would have taken away a lot of votes from Teocons.

Ron Paul is looking better and better in 12! What other candidate is going to represent the Tea Party if Palin doesn't run?

Mike Pence is from my hometown, we went to the same high school, ive met him personally when i was younger. Pence is one of the better men in washington, he is one of the more conservative and i believe deep down inside he is even more conservative than he lets on. If Paul doesnt get president i wanted it to be Pence. That being said, Im very glad he'll be my governor and our current governor Mitch Daniels is a great one as well, if he decides to run for President he will be tough to beat.
