Suckabee declares Goldwater\Reagan\Paul conservatism a bigger threat than Liberalism.

Huckabee puts foot in mouth....again. Yesterday it was assassinating Obama, today it's trashing conservatism.

More from that Huckabee Interview [Ramesh Ponnuru]

The former governor and presidential candidate also says:

The greatest threat to classic Republicanism is not liberalism; it's this new brand of libertarianism, which is social liberalism and economic conservatism, but it's a heartless, callous, soulless type of economic conservatism because it says "look, we want to cut taxes and eliminate government. If it means that elderly people don't get their Medicare drugs, so be it. If it means little kids go without education and healthcare, so be it." Well, that might be a quote pure economic conservative message, but it's not an American message. It doesn't fly. People aren't going to buy that, because that's not the way we are as a people. That's not historic Republicanism. Historic Republicanism does not hate government; it's just there to be as little of it as there can be. But they also recognize that government has to be paid for.

He goes on for a while in this vein. Huckabee is right, I think, to suggest that economic libertarianism is a political weakness of the Republican party—something I regret, although he evidently does not. But that truth is buried amid some mistakes. Plenty of Huckabee's critics on size-of-government issues were, in truth, socially conservative; few of them wanted to "eliminate government"; and the elements of conservatism with which he takes issue are hardly "new."

You're surprised that the highest taxing governor in the history of the state of Arkansas (more than Clinton) declares true conservatism a bigger threat than liberalism? Huckabee's solution to the national debt, if I had to guess, would be to tax everyone 50% for the next 10 years to both reduce the debt AND continue global war and Fed inflation.

Wow. He is rewriting history with his definition of histotical conservatism, but the elderly who rely on entitlements will hear him loud and clear.

Right. And they are a huge bloc of voters.

I agree with Huck on this one.... WE are the biggest threat to the NEOcons that have taken control of OUR party.

The man is misguided. His view of Christianity is warped, not to mention authoritarian and divisive. Everything about the mans policies will drive a wedge of 'righteous' conflict.

He should now that liberals will never allow morals back into schools and public spaces under his or any other morally forced fascist banner. Separating overreaching government policies from education and funding of any type is the only way the Hucks Army crowd will ever see God from being persecuted by liberalism. This back and forth tug-of-war Democracy, which is really nothing more than tyranny of the majority, is everything that has gone wrong in this country. The end-all-be-all root of all of evil. Just to point out the not so obvious this is a Constitutional Republic meant to protect everyones beliefs equally, like it or not. They are trying for the whole pie and people will only suffer under their righteous policies in one way or another.

News flash for Hucks people. Church is where fellow believers go to grow beliefs together. God trumps free will above all else after all. If you insist on forcing the church onto people they will go running and resent your efforts.

ok /rant off.

Jesus never demanded the Roman Empire to give a Medicaid prescription program.

Government is a soulless entity, no amount of welfare programs will change that.

He's right. Responsible, self disciplined, and self reliant is not the way we ARE as a people, today. It was who we WERE as a people, and we can be that way again!
