Ann Roth had never been to a political town hall until her congressman, U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, returned home from an epic fight in Washington to end the federal government’s blanket collection of Americans’ phone records.

Freeport resident Roth joined her husband to support Amash for leading the charge in Congress to eliminate funding for the National Security Agency’s surveillance program.

“He’s willing to be out there and almost be the punching bag sometimes,” Roth said after Amash’s Lowell Township meeting in mid-August with about 200 people packed inside. “He’s stepping out into some very bold areas and may be opening some closet doors that have needed to be open for a long time.”

Amash, 33, managed to simultaneously unnerve the Democratic Obama administration and his Republican Party leadership by charging the NSA phone program violates the U.S. Constitution and rallying almost enough support in the House for an amendment to end it.

Since he entered Congress in 2011, Amash has forged a path of independence — even if it meant running afoul of his GOP leadership and costing him his seat at the prominent House Budget Committee.

Amash rocks. i'm pretty sure my dem congresswoman is a fan of his on civil liberties and probably on war as well.
