How does the son or daughter of an illegal immigrant get into the armed forces in the first place?! I would assume that you have to be a citizen of the US to be in the US armed forces. The only way they can be a naturalized citizen is if they were born here...and that would have to have been at least 18 years ago for them to be old enough for service. His argument doesn't make much sense.
 
Our tax system is designed to shift a larger burden toward the higher wage earners. Making it easy for millions of low wage-earners to come here legally is still going to put more burden on middle-to-upper class Americans to provide the services that currently benefit poorer Americans. While it won't be as bad as it is now, it will still be worse than if we hold the illegals accountable, secure our borders and hold the line on immigration policy (ie, enforce current laws).

Oh, and McCain is a moron.
 
Why doesn't someone ask him how many moms of soldiers there are (illegals). It's probably a few thousand moms -- tops. Someone needs to call out this lousy argument of his.

How about telling him he can have one of the mom's that lost her American son in Iraq?
 
The real push I think is to use the illegal immigration problem to staff our military. Enlistment is down. Illegal immigration is up. Two problems solved by just making them all cannon fodder.

But then the problem is you have semi-mercenaries who are not fighting for our country, but their own reward (citizenship) and will do as little as possible in order to get home alive.

Keep an eye out for the DREAM provision.
 
=dannno;963004]Growing up I lived within walking distance of the largest illegal immigration camp in all of southern california (it was in san diego county). There were hundreds if not thousands living up in the hills in a community near some agricultural and flower fields. They even had their own restaurant and soccer field tucked back there and nobody gave them a hard time. They worked hard, and I never heard about any illegals raping or murdering anybody.

I have been surrounded by illegals and/or first generation Mexican families my entire life. I currently live in an apartment building owned by a first generation mexican family, and most of the units are occupied by family members. The last two residences I've had were in Mexican neighborhoods. I am, and always have been caucasian.

I agree with Dr. Paul completely that people wouldn't have a problem with illegals if they weren't given special privileges for being illegal. I just don't think they would be a "problem" because there would only be enough here to fill the demand.. By subsidizing them and paying for their benefits, we are encouraging them to come here and that is where we run into problems.

I have no problem with illegal aliens, they are simply trying to make a better life for themselves.

Florida is having a different experience with some of them. The new thing here for making money in america if you are an illegal is to kidnap peoples kids for ransom, and to hit and run steal purses from out of car windows while people are filling up at the gas station.

The latest in my community is illegal landscapers, casing out homes during the day while they are in doing lawns, looking for who may be out of town, and then
coming back and robbing the house. They watch for who is putting yellow slips in their mail boxxes, to tell the Postman to hold the mail while they are away.

These people are doing nothing to help one feel warm and fuzzy towards some illegals and their methods for making money here.

My position on immigration is independent of Paul's tax policy.

There's another aspect of this to be concerned with, especially while Bush is pushing so hard to take everyone's guns away....

Do you think any of these illegals would think twice about following orders against American citizens?

American citizens disarmed, federal government with an army of illegals and a mercenary army (blackwater). I'd say thats pretty distant from the founders view of how things should be.
 
You can all flame Mc Cain for the way he responded to this question but he was actually showing some human decency here. It seems that the current discourse in the States says that you have to take the position "all illegals are criminals and I will smoke them out of their caves and kick them over our borders" to be taken seriously. It wasn't always that way..

Mc Cain obviously doesn't agree with this point of view. He was willing to state that he will secure the borders but not that he will hunt down every illegal in your country to kick them all out.

Whether you agree with the man or not.. This was actually the first time ever that I have seen him stand up for a personal believe and I respect him for it.

Which is not to say that his Iraq soldier - illegal mother analogy isn't completely ridiculous and that the man would still be the worst possible choice for the Presidency... But on this one issue I think he actually showed a human face. Whether you agree with him or not.
