ROMNEY NEEDS BIG GET-OUT-THE-VOTE EFFORT TO CATCH McCAIN

On the Republican side, the early low profile campaign strategy of Rudy Giuliani has cost him
dearly in Arizona as GOP voters look elsewhere for leadership and find it mostly in John McCain and Mitt
Romney. By not competing in the early primaries, it appears that Giuliani has relegated himself to the
political non-entity level in Arizona after briefly leading in the polls last fall. Today, Giuliani attracts only
seven percent and barely three percent are strongly committed to his election. The marginal performance of
Giuliani may come to stand as a classic example of how not to run a presidential campaign in a western state
like Arizona where the phrase “From New York City?” may cut deeper than preferences for taco sauce.
McCain holds a commanding 40 percent compared to 23 percent for Romney, nine percent for
Huckabee and just seven percent for Thompson. Thompson withdrew from the race earlier this week but his
name will remain on the ballot. Some think that Thompson supporters will shift to McCain, but they very
well might find Romney or Huckabee of great appeal. If these voters do gravitate toward McCain, it is
basically a wrap for McCain in Arizona but if not, the GOP race could also become significantly more
competitive. Among most likely to vote Republican, McCain’s lead over Romney shrinks from 17 to 13
points.
While the Republican presidential primary appears more settled than the Democratic race, it too
could also experience some shifts by election day. This traces to the fact that a four of ten GOP voters who
“lean” toward one candidate or the other admit they could change their mind on who they favor between now
and election day. Another ten percent were without any favorite at the time of this survey .

McCain is a douche. Many of us in AZ still remember his savings and loan scandal aka Keating five.

refresher...

"Following the deregulation of the banking industry in the 1980s, savings and loan associations (also known as thrifts) were given the flexibility to invest their depositors' funds in commercial real estate. (Previously, they had been restricted to investing in residential real estate.) Many savings and loan associations began making risky investments. As a result, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the federal agency that regulates the industry, tried to clamp down on the trend. In so doing, however, the FHLBB clashed with the Reagan administration, whose policy was deregulation of many industries, including the thrift industry. The administration declined to submit budgets to Congress that would request more funding for the FHLBB's regulatory efforts."

Kinda sounds like the sub-prime debacle

"After months of testimony revealed that all five senators acted improperly to differing degrees, the senators continually said they were following the status quo of campaign funding practices.
McCain also remained in the Senate and he made campaign finance reform a key legislative interest. The scandal was followed by a number of attempts to adopt campaign finance reform -- spearheaded by U.S. Sen. David Boren (D-OK) -- but most attempts died in committee. A weakened reform was passed in 1993. Substantial campaign finance reform was not passed until the adoption of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002."

In other words he made a back room deal to look like he wants to "fix" things, full knowing it would never fly, and he could say 'well I tried'. And they wouldn't press charges or force him to retire.

ddogggphx, same way he was broke in july, but some how keeps going with no substantial grassroots support. And now "leads" in polls? wow

"WASHINGTON (CNN) – CNN has learned the already-dire situation for Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign has actually gotten even worse, with two sources close to the candidate saying the campaign only has a paltry $250,000 left.

The sources tell CNN that next week the McCain campaign will reveal it has about $1.75 million in unpaid debts, wiping out the $2 million in cash-on-hand the campaign currently has in the bank.

It was not immediately clear whether the campaign debt must be repaid immediately or whether the debt can be paid back over time, including after the presidential campaign ends.

Even though McCain has raised just over $11 million overall in the last three months, his campaign has spent large sums of money, one of the primary reasons for the departure earlier this week of his top two strategists, Terry Nelson and John Weaver.

A McCain spokesman had no comment on the latest financial troubles, which will spark a new round of speculation about the candidate's viability. Campaign officials are expected to release details about campaign’s financial situation early next week."

How does RP only have 4 percent? I thought AZ was one of our man's stronger states.

Lots of young people here love RP, we love our guns, and our frontier feel. However, we have the same problem as Florida.. Old People vote for McCain.

I have a feeling your gonna see southern arizona precincts go to McCain, thats where Tucson and Green Valley are (big retirement areas). Northern Arizona with Flagstaff is hippy central, meaning they are primarily gonna be democrats and probably gonna be the bigger showing for Dr. Paul.

Phoenix is a toss up, its pretty much a suburb of L.A now.

The deadline for registering republican was Jan 7th, and unfortunatly I know many first tiem voters that discovered him a bit later than that cutoff.

McCain is high in our polls because he is our long time senator and for the last 3 months has been on the nightly news every night! "Home town hero John McCain is campaigning on his Straight Talk Express in <insert sate here>. John McCain consistently leads in the polls and is a shoe in for the Repulican choice for candidate. Back to you John."

PUKE
At a huge gun show, we were the only candidate there, we had 4 booths. And everybody loved Paul, agrees with every thing he says but says he doesn't have a chance in hell! People in my neighborhood saying the same thing.

The media war is beating us.

McCain getting 30% in his home state is a bad sign for him. That would be like Romney getting 30% in Utah.

I wonder why McCain likes that prison camp and rouge Sheriff in Phoenix..? Could this be our future?

Hell yeah. I can tell you all of the talk on KFYI is anti McCain. This is the Clear Channel, Rush, Hannity and JD Hayworth staion.
