Ok. I am seriously considering furthering my education and I am currently looking at getting a masters in economics, but of course I am an austrian. I understand that most mainstream colleges are not austrian (I know that there are austrian degrees but I am not in a position to persue that option). Would it be a bad idea or nonsense for me to get a master in econ.? I am not well versed enough to know if most austrians disagree with all mainstream economic ideas and the mathmatics involved. Would it totally screw me up learning that stuff or is there benefit. Granted, I am looking at, not just education, but a job/money.

Any thoughts...

If advancement in your job would be worth it , yes , if not , probably not .

If you really want to study Austrian ideas, then apply to a University with Austrian-sympathetic profs. You could try U Missouri where Peter Klein is, or George Mason where a bunch of good ones are.

Have a look at this list for some ideas.

That list you provided says that ole miss is a grad B. It apparently has a free market professor. I live in Ms. The only problem is my travel is very limited (I am a teacher with a kid and do not live near ole miss). I would have to take as many online courses and maybe commute during the summer.

This is what I used to make my decisions. I ended up applying to U Chicago, NYU, and George Mason. I'm at NYU now, and I plan on taking a course in Austrian Economics with Mario Rizzo next semester. :)

Hope this helps.

Have you found that taking mainstream econ. conflicts with your austrian beliefs?

Nah, always best to know the opposition. I know what I'm here for, which is to get a piece of paper that says that I graduated from a "top" school in the field. Education really has nothing to do with it. :p

Plus, I get a lot of funny anecdotes to tell other people. For example, tonight, my macro professor made the case for why the Fed should increase inflation expectations to bring us out of the current economic recession. The best part? He's employed by the New York Federal Reserve.

By the way - you're located in Mississippi? I could use a volunteer down there for a project that I'm working on....

I was wanting to go there for my MBA at stern. Are you currently doing your undergrad at NYU? How are the facilities, I'd be curious to know. Thanks:)
