THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KABC) -- A mass shooting at a Thousand Oaks nightclub left 13 people dead, including a Ventura County sheriff's sergeant and the gunman, authorities said Thursday morning.

Venutra County sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow, as well as Sheriff Geoff Dean, said the suspect was killed inside the venue. They did not want to count him among the 12 victims.

The shooting happened around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday at Borderline Bar & Grill at 99 Rolling Oaks Dr. Ventura County sheriff's officials said there were reports of shots fired at the club.

uthorities said hundreds of people were inside the bar when the gunfire rang out. In an interview, Buschow came close to tears and said he knows the wounded deputy.

"It's been a rough night for all of us," he said.

During a press briefing, Dean identified the sergeant as Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department who considered retiring within the next year. At points he choked up, but said that Helus died a hero.

"Ron was a hardworking, dedicated sheriff's sergeant. He was totally committed. He gave his all and tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives, to save other people," he said.

Dean also said in his 41 years in law enforcement, he'd never experienced a mass shooting.

"I never thought I would see the things around the country that would happen, but I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in, it doesn't matter how safe your community is, it can happen anywhere," he said.
Witness John Hedge, of Moorpark, said he saw a suspect throwing smoke bombs into the front of the restaurant. He also said he saw a security guard get shot.

"I was at the front door and I was talking to my stepdad. I just started hearing these big pops. Pop, pop, pop. There was probably three or four, I hit the ground. I look up - the security guard is dead. Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot.

"He was down. The gunman was throwing smoke grenades all over the place. I saw him point to the back of the cash register...and he just kept firing. I ran out the front door," he said.

Hodge added that there may have been about 12 shots by the time he got out of the door.

He said the gunman had a beard, wore a hat, had a black jacket and may have had glasses.

"I thought it was a joke when the shots started firing. I know people there. I hope everybody's OK. I don't know how I didn't get shot," the man said.

Tim, Hodge's stepfather, who was in tears, said he was next to the entrance about to leave after playing pool when smoke came into the room.

"He fired the first shot. I knew it was live. I knew it was real. My son thought it was a joke so I pulled him down and got some cover. I looked up and he was moving to the right. He shot the front doorman, who was just a young man. Then he shot the cashier, just a young girl.

"Then he started moving to the right. He wasn't looking at us. Then he went into the office, where all the cash and stuff is. He didn't say anything at all. He just started shooting," he said.

That's a weird fk'n thing to say at a time like that. . .

These people exist in Oklahoma. They never, however, last long enough to have a dozen victims.

'...it can happen anywhere"? Sort of.

This sounds like it was a planned robbery that also happened to be very violent.

Strange coincidence that last major shooting in LV and this one both involve "country music" venues.

Yes , sounds like a planned robbery where the intent was to off the cashier , security guard and leave .

If I were a betting woman I would bet he was being treated for PTSD and on a cocktail of psychotropic drugs.

So long as Big Pharma buys billions of dollars' worth of ads on the MSM, we'll never know.

But I wouldn't take that bet in any case.

Ya that is a little bit of an odd place for a country/western bar so close to the coast.. but they get good turnout because they are so close to the very high population Los Angeles "valley", as well as a freeway that goes up north toward some more rural areas I suppose. I have been there before to see Adam Carolla perform his comedy show, but they are usually advertising country and line dancing stuff.

Yeah, that's the sick little circle of death they have there.

Killer goes on a rampage>Media exploits the tragedy for ratings>Big Pharma uses the increased ratings to push more drugs>people with problems see those ads and buy more drugs>they ignore the warnings about suicidal and homicidal thoughts>one of those people picks up a weapon and goes on a rampage>Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

With calls for public disarmament during each cycle--as if a person psyched out on Big Pharma candy couldn't use a knife, or a car, or...

No worries this time, my friend. I've been assured by a good many people right here on RPF that Trump is serious about protecting our Right to Keep and Bear Arms, so we'll be fine. They've assured me of the this on numerous occasions. :sarcasm:

Oh, great, now comes the calls for war vets to undergo psyche before purchasing guns.

Democrats renew push for gun control, assault weapons ban

Just hours after the killings by a lone gunman in a California bar, Democrats began lining up to demand more gun control, an issue that fell off the map during the midterm congressional elections despite the shootings in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

“We need to do something about this. And I’m glad that we have a Democratic majority in the House,” said Democratic Party Chairman Tom Perez.

That did not take long.

Flashback under Obama:

New documents obtained by The Daily Caller reveal that ATF, a division of the Department of Justice, is working with the FBI and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to enter veterans who get VA benefits into the government’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

TheDC first reported on a government program in which the VA sends veterans’ medical information to the FBI to disarm them. VA uses sneaky criteria to get veterans on the list for “persons prohibited under federal law from receiving or possessing firearms.”
