Man Drops Charging Brown Bear With 13 Bullets from AK-74

I have read this story many times but I have never found a primary source and most of them are the same, word for word.

"Bella Twin at age 63 and her friend D. Auger were hunting grouse and picking berries, near Lesser Slave Lake in Northern Alberta. The gun she owned and carried was a single-shot bolt-action .22 caliber rimfire rifle. They were walking a cutline that had been made for oil exploration when they ran into a ex-large grizzly following the same survey line towards them. If they ran,the grizzly would notice them and give chase, so they quietly sat down in a brush pile and hoped the grizzly would pass them by without any trouble. But the grizzly came to close and Bella Twin shot the grizzly in the side of the head with a .22 Long cartridge. The big grizzly dropped, kicked and then lay still. Bella taking no chances went up to it and fired the 7 cartridges that she had left into the grizzly's head. This took place in 1953, was the world-record grizzly for several years. Which goes to show you that anything is possible in an emergency. Twin’s grizzly stands as the longest-reigning provincial big-game record in Alberta.

The Boone and Crockett score for her bear was 26 5/16."

There is also a picture out there of her posing in front of the bearskin holding the .22 rifle.

Pretty much everyone carries a gun in Alaska when they are outdoors for just that reason.

Hopefully they're smart enough to know that just because a gun looks scary enough for people to want to ban it, that that doesn't mean it's an ideal weapon for taking down a bear.

I carry a 12ga with hollow point slugs when we go camping in the mountains.

Any back country guide I've ever talked to carried shotguns for bear. Twelve guage 00Buck or slugs. A desert eagle for a Bear... lol, make sure you saw off half the barrel so it doesn't hurt as much when Yogey sticks it in your butt. Bears can explosively reach speeds in excess of 30mph and if it were me I would want a shotgun and a diaper.

What you propose? They carry rpg?

Once they get they get their heart rate up and adrenalize, you're screwed. They've found older grizzly bear carcasses with several high caliber slugs lodged in their body.

I do not doubt it, I had a stand off with a black bear once and it was a terrifying moment in my life. All I had were shoes, no guns. But if I could have a gun in bear country it would be a sawed off shotgun, 12 guage, either a pump with a slug then buckshot or a double barrel one slug one buck shot. Just would need to wait until the last moment and put all that buck in its face and understand you are still going to get hurt, probably pretty bad too.

Depends on the circumstances. If you are shooting at a malnutriotioned middle-eastern farmer then it is non-lethal. But if you are shooting at a big man or a bear it is like a cannon.

Can you expound? I know next to nothing about firearms. What would make a round more deadly against a larger creature? Wouldn't it be the other way around? Please excuse my ignorance on the subject.

For one thing, more time to tumble provided it has the necessary velocity.

How does a bullet tumble? I thought it went through flesh? And if there's more flesh to protect vitals wouldn't a bigger creature be less harmed?

some bullets go end over end with no definable linear path, causing debilitating wound channels.

So, if someone is skinny wouldn't this cause instant death since the bullet has less to travel to get to the vitals?

and with more flesh, that wound can be larger. More blood vessels can be damaged and more blood can get out.

If the bullet is heading for vital organs, and it is a rifle round, game over anyways. Skinny, fat, doesn't matter.

So, it just sounds like both large and small creatures are screwed. But then again, they're screwed with most bullets anyway so no real news here. When you said skinny people are more safe from bullets you caught my attention.

Had a neighbor get a Black bear with a DB 12ga and bird shot, (many years ago)
He was duck hunting and the bear charged.

Several reloads,, and the bear fell at his feet.. (can you say "fast and Furious"?)

It is not the recommended method. ;)

If you are equating handgun calibers with rifle calibers as regards damage -- well I don't know what to say. Yeah, dude, if you shoot something in brain it is probably going to die. So, why ask the question?

Because you said a malnourished farmer would be safer from "insert type of bullet here" than a large man or a bear. I fail to see that even with your explanation. Sorry.
