I agree with Zogby (who is Arab himself) if similar slurs were made against other groups they would be off the air. This is especially true in talk radio.

Washington » A majority of Americans have an unfavorable impression of Islam, alone among major religions, a new poll finds.

The survey by the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies found 53 percent of Americans view Islam unfavorably compared with 42 percent who view the religion favorably. Majorities view other major religions favorably: 91 percent for Christianity, 71 percent for Judaism and 58 percent for Buddhism.

The negativity comes even as 63 percent of Americans said they know little about Islam.

Dalia Mogahed, executive director of the Gallup center, said that, while other religious extremists are portrayed as being outside the mainstream, Islamic terrorists are described as representatives of their religion.

"Where a deranged person of a certain faith commits a crime in the name of their faith, we look at these incidents as someone misinterpreting faith," Mogahed said. "When a terrorist commits an act of violence in the name of Islam, it is often times framed as being devoted to the faith rather than being deviant."

That view is fed by commentators voicing anti-Islamic rhetoric in a way that would cause them to be called bigots and kept off the airwaves if they talked the same way about other minorities, said James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute.

"Arab- and Muslim-bashing is the one bigotry that's acceptable," Zogby said.

this is solely due to zionist control of hollywood and news media.....pumping out anti Islam bigotry 24/7 while their Israeli and neo-con co-conspirators blow up our skyscrapers and hijack our airplanes

Americans have a strange way of showing that negativity, they've just elected son of a muslim arab man as their President despite glaring red flags about his handlers and against all historic odds. There may be some aprehension about this exotic belief system but in public view there seems to be a whole lot of appeasement on display. While we're busy with economics, there was article that muslim memebrship of US Congress had quietly jumped 200%. Close to quarter of US Congress would likely be muslim/arab/jewish in two election cycles based on recent trends.

I couldn't look up the article right now, going from 0 to 2 would be mathematically 200% jump? For their small population, it's still pretty remarkable, there may be some more unelected muslims in positions of power in Obama white house - excluding Obama ofcourse.

Rush Limbaugh says Obama is Arab, 'not black'
During his Monday broadcast, Rush told his listeners that Barack Obama is “not black. ... He's Arab.

Limbaugh is an idiot.

Obama is obviously black, he is clearly not arab, just look at him. And his father was an atheist.

Muslims are under represented in Congress, .004% to a population of 2%, W. Bush had more Muslims in his White House then Obama.

You sure about this? I assumed muslim population was much smaller, jews were 2% in US. But not sure .
I may have mixed up Obama having most non-Christians in the WH than any other President in history. Where does one check this data? That is if it is not too politically incorrect.

Obama isn't a Muslim.

Like what?

First of all you're wrong. Second of all - who cares if it were true?

No. You couldn't give a percentage jump from 0 to 2 because you can't divide by zero.

Why would one have a positive view? Islam is illogical as are the rest of em!

Well I'd disagree but clearly this isn't the reason. Other religions were rated positively.

(Although Christianity wasn't broken down into denominations. When "Mormon" is listed it generally gets a high negative view as well).

It's not entirely true. According to FBI data, there were more attacks on jews than muslims after 9/11 as shocking as it may seem.

Not at all surprised by that. There are a lot more people who are anti-Muslim but the people who are anti-Jew are REALLY anti-Jew.

Just as an example I have a good friend who is a Southern Baptist. He's a good guy but he doesn't like Muslims. No real good reason - just 9/11 and the stuff he learned at Church. But even though he doesn't like Muslims this never comes up in conversation, I've known him for ten years and randomly he'll say something when there's a terrorist attack but for the most part he could care less. He's not going on anti-Muslim tirades or telling people how horrible Muslims are or attacking Mosques or threatening innocent Muslims who live nearby. I imagine that 99.99% of the time he doesn't give Islam or Muslims a passing thought.

There are a lot of people that are anti-Muslim like that. A lot more people than are anti-Jew. But the people who are anti-Jew are really anti-Jew, and its a big part of their life (same with people who hate blacks - that's why I almost never see them but they make so much noise on the internet).

I'm generalizing and obviously there are many exceptions - but that's my perception of things.

I think a lot of the people who don't like jews don't like muslims either. But a lot of people who strongly hate muslims love Jews because they are ardent zionists and believe jews to be God's chosen who have the right to cleanse Palestine of Muslims.

Though I do think Anti Semitism is on the rise among common folk, and I think a lot of it can be traced to economic downturn. I can't point to a poll, but just in everyday conversation with people, I get that feeling, lots of negatives said about jews that they wouldn't say to a jew's face but are willing to say in closed circles.

2 is .4% of Congress, and Islam is about 1-2% of the population, so they are not that severely underrepresented.

BTW, I have an "unfavorable" view of Islam, you might say.

People are not sent to Congress to represent a religious faith, or a specific race. They are sent to Congress to represent ALL Americans in their state.

Isn't that a bit collectivist of you? What happened to judging each individual by their own merits? Isn't that what we say we stand for?

You know, I realize that since the presidential debate, that a whole lot of people have not known where to direct their pent up emotions, but we have a bunch of primaries coming upon us in short order and a variety of liberty candidates in those races. Please everyone, try to find something constructive to involve yourselves in. Remember that we are a big movement, with people from across the political spectrum; people who came together and put their differences aside to work for liberty for all.

I have a negative view of "Islam" not of Muslims, necessarily. Besides, I am not opposed to the idea of the collective. Both the individual and the collective have important roles to play in society.

Get a calculator out bud, 2/535 or 2/435 .00373 .00459.

by your comment, I have an unfavorable view of you.

(1) 2/535 is .4%, you forgot to multiply by 100 to get the percentage.

(2) I don't care.

Government representation for all individuals > government representation for your individual religious beliefs.

Any/every doesn't matter.
