Maine Republicans blast opponent for World of Warcraft play

oh for cryin out loud! Really? geeze.. I'm not a WOW player but wow.. picking on a candidate for games?

What's the retort here.. neener neener.. GOP candidate once played spin the bottle as a kid? Maybe bites own toe nails.. geeze or gawd forbid.. uses a comb made in China.

It's not just the under 40 set that calls bullshit on this one

No, I'm well past fifty and it's as plain as the fuzzy words on the screen to me.

Just by going off of her character's pic there, she doesn't play that often at all I'd say. The gear she has on, if my memory serves me, is regular quest rewards. There's now the raidfinder option that takes all of an hour to clear the 'endgame' content and get the highest level of gear, so if she isn't even doing that, she's not playing very often at all. She'd be better off making the move to Guildwars 2 like I did, you pay for the box and then no sub after that. :p

I read this the other day and it made me want to spit nails, THIS is what our nation's politics have come to!? I seriously hope this isn't our people up there doing this, because this is simply pants on head retarded.

Its funny to make fun of people who play wow in a jokingly way, but this is incredibly pathetic. I would vote for her just because of this.

is she a liberty candidate? if not, why do i care. especially if wow is the reason enough time is removed from her to learn about why the fudge we're in a mess. if that's the source of distraction, i don't want her in there indeed. she can lose some weight while whining.

You should care because what someone does in the privacy of their own home should be of no concern to you whatsoever. And really, pointing out that she's not model thin? Mom apparently didnt love this one enough as a child.

I hope it's not Maine's "liberty friendly" Republicans bringing up some stupid crap like that. Never played WoW but I have friends that do. I've been tempted to try it once in awhile but I'm a little afraid of becoming addicted, and I've not got time for any more addictions! Stupid work!

Don't do it! It's a Skinner Box, a trap designed to create psychological addiction:

Does anyone have a link to this alleged website? I could use a good laugh right now.

I hope she gets skewered in the election.

well, I think this is a legitimate attack angle. think about it... someone who is addicted to an online game. or is susceptible to being addicted. I'd have trouble for voting for a Ron Paul republican if this was the case for them.

Her gaming behavior indicates she is running for office for the fun of it, and does not have any long term aims or goals...

i'd take a Ron Paul gamer over a neocon warmonger anyday.
in fact, we'd be better off if all of congress and the president were so addicted to mmo's they couldn't get anything else done.

More entertainment-politics nonsense. This story and everyone who's reporting on it is in the virtual world, where magically this shit matters

It's an entertaining story though! Makes for good ratings!

“So I’m a level 68 orc rogue girl. That means I stab things… a lot… Who would have thought that a peace lovin’, social worker and democrat would enjoy that?!”

I would have thought that, Colleen. You and your ilk are sponsors of state coercion and violence against the American people, in your misguided pursuit for an unobtainable Utopia, regardless of how much suffering and how many broken lives are left in its wake.

LITTLETON, New Hampshire (Reuters) - A Maine Senate race has turned into a fight over trolls, dwarves and goblin-like creatures known as orcs.

In a mailing this week, state Republicans accused Democrat Colleen Lachowicz of living in a fantasy world and making "crude, vicious and violent comments" in online forums dedicated to World of Warcraft, a popular online game.

Lachowicz, who is challenging incumbent Senator Tom Martin, has responded by accusing Republicans of focusing on her hobbies rather than public policy issues.

"I think it's weird that I'm being targeted for playing online games," she said in a statement. "What's next? Will I be ostracized for playing Angry Birds or Words With Friends?"

A website produced by Republicans includes a link to Lachowicz's online character, Santiaga, who sports a purple Mohawk and is armed with a meteor shard. It notes that the game takes place in a "make believe land Azeroth" and that Lachowicz is "playing at level 85 — the highest level one can attain."

The mailing said she spends hundreds of hours involved in World of Warcraft, which features an array of characters such as trolls and orcs.

"We need a senator who lives in our world, not Colleen's world," the mailing said.

It also highlights comments Lachowicz made in online forums to other World of Warcraft players in 2009 and 2010, including: "I love poisoning and stabbing," "I can kill stuff without going to jail" and "I like to stab things and I'm originally from New Jersey, what's your (expletive) point?"

Ericka Dodge, a spokeswoman for Maine Democrats, said in an interview on Friday that Lachowicz, a social worker, had only spent about 30 minutes playing World of Warcraft since January as she was now spending her free time campaigning.

"Clearly before she started the campaign she spent a lot more time gaming," said Dodge. "She's also a knitter, but my guess is no one is going to attack her for that."

An estimated 211.5 million people, or about two-thirds of the population, play video games in the U.S., according to NPD Group.

David Sorensen, a spokesman for the Maine Republican Party, said the mailing and website weren't meant to antagonize gamers.

"As far as we're concerned, it's not a ‘World of Warcraft story,' it's a ‘candidate saying outrageous things through World of Warcraft story,'" he said on Friday.

Way to insult the younger voters... lol. Seems republicans are pretty good at insulting people.

She seems like a very interesting person. World of Warcraft, knitting, and politician. Hmm... not to mention all this and she's a female.

There's also the inconvenient detail that she is a socialist. (But just a wild guess, I bet the Republican candidate is also)

Do we know that she's "addicted," or is this just based on a stereotype of the people that play this particular game (as awesomely depicted on a South Park episode, by the way). People can spend their time playing online games, watching television, fishing, dancing, playing sports; it's all the same to me.

The real issue here is that she's a self-labeled "Progressive."
