Live updates: Alabama Senate race

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill says he is investigating concerns of voter fraud in last week’s Senate special election

Merrill, a Republican, told Fox10 Monday he was investigating a viral clip of a Doug Jones supporter on election night. In a spontaneous interview in the moments after the race was announced for Jones, the supporter spoke about getting people out to vote.

“We came here all the way from different parts of the country as part of our fellowship and all of us pitched in to vote and canvas together and we got our boy elected,” the supporter, who is not identified, says.

“Well, it’s very disconcerting when someone who’s not from Alabama says that they participated in our election, so now it’s incumbent upon us to try to identify this young man, to see what kind of role he played ― if it was to simply play a canvassing roll, or if he was part of a process that went out and tried to register voters, or if he himself actually became a registered voter,” Merrill said.

Helping or encouraging registered voters to get out to the polls is not voter fraud. To actually vote, people had to be registered at least 15 days before the election and have valid ID- both at the registration and at the polls. Alabama is a voter ID state. People can't just show up at the polls and vote. Even if the are legal state residents.

Merrill said, so far, there is no concrete evidence that any voter fraud has taken place.

"We don't have any evidence of people doing that, our numbers do not indicate that has happened

The Secretary of State's Office also said voter fraud would be unlikely because every voter is required to show a government photo identification card before casting a vote.

"We have one of the most stringent voting laws in the nation," said Merrill.

The kid said people came from "all over the country" to vote, the local Demoncrat machine might have provided phony IDs and registrations.

If your side has nothing to hide why are you afraid of an investigation?

If he came from outside the state and was not registered to vote in the state and did not have proper ID, he would not have been able to vote. The Republican Secretary of State said there was absolutely no evidence of any voter fraud- all according to your own source.

That is why they are going to try to find it with an investigation.

The Alabama political machine is Republican. The Secretary of State- in charge of elections and voter registration- has been Republican ever year but four since 1998. He sees no evidence of fraud. So if there was fraud, it had to involve Republicans. Were Republicans trying to register more Democrats?

Alabama has a Demoncrat party and they control some local jurisdictions.

Why do you post this horse shit here? You post like you have been here for less than a week, you've been here for almost 10 years!!! Clearly the Republican establishment opposed Moore, and that is one of the reasons why most people here actually supported him.

So do you think that the Republicans hurriedly rushed to register out of state Democrats between the primary and the election just so Moore could lose the election? Why? That could put them at risk in future elections in the state as well.

There were two months between Moore getting the nod in the primary and the special election.

Last uncounted ballots: Roy Moore can't close 20,000-vote loss

Republican Roy Moore hasn't conceded his 20,000-vote loss to Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama's Senate race, and military and provisional vote totals announced Wednesday aren't enough for Moore to close the deficit.

Jones beat Moore on Dec. 12 to become the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Alabama in a quarter-century. Moore was beset by allegations of sexual misconduct involving teenage girls decades ago.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill announced Wednesday that a total of 366 military ballots were returned from overseas. He also said 4,967 provisional ballots were cast. Even if all of those votes went to Moore, that is well short of the 20,000-vote deficit that Moore would need to close the gap. It also would not be enough to trigger an automatic recount.

"No additional ballots are eligible to be received," Merrill's office said in announcing those last ballot totals.

Uh, yes, and because they aren't real Republicans.. they don't care about small government, they only care about power.. and they don't care if Republicans have power, they only care if the establishment has power because that is their 'team'. Same reason why there were a bunch of anti-Trump Republicans who happened to be on the side of the establishment. They only care about power. If they liked Trump, I would NEVER have supported him.

In fact, the establishment folks, and people like you are a fantastic bellwether regarding who and what to support. If you were a legitimate Trump supporter, very likely I never would have supported him.

So it is just a reflex action. If Zippy says it, you believe the opposite.

Ron Paul was against Trump. Is that why you like Trump?

Uh, yes, and because they aren't real Republicans.. they don't care about small government, they only care about power..

That's precisely why they ARE real Republicans.

But note that that description applies just as much to Trump.

Possibly

To keep control of the party.

That could put them at risk in future elections in the state as well.
Unlikely and in any case a risk they might be willing to take.

There were two months between Moore getting the nod in the primary and the special election.

So?

That's precisely why they ARE real Republicans.

Wrong.

Maybe you should consider why the establishment spent so much energy and political capital trying to keep Trump out of the White House..
