Ron Paul supporters did very well last night. We represented approximately 35-40% of the seated (voting) delegates. A total of 53 people were competing for 14 State Delegate positions. The party apparatus handed out their pink sheet indicated the party endorsed slate of delegates to each person in the room. Ron Paul supporters had a similar slate and voting strategy, but kept it semi-secret.

It is critical that a prioritized slate be prepared in advance of the caucus. RP voters need to vote as a block and prioritize the delegates. Our group of delegates got together several days before, and prioritized our slate based on:
1) Ability to go to the State convention in Spokane on May 29-31.
2) Ability to win over "independent" voters. We each prepared and gave a 30 second speech about why we would be a good representative for the district. Focus on your background, your passion, and the Republican principles you hold dear. Do not mention the war, as that is a polarizing issue.

It's important to get to the caucus early, mingle, and try to identify any Ron Paul supporters who are not aware of the voting strategy. Bring extra copies of the prioritized slate to give to them.

Before your caucus, please get in touch with your Meetup organizer, or the state organizer to help identify each other and strategize.

Here's how the actual process went:

The process began at 7 pm and ended at 12:30 am; it was a very long evening.

Each of the 53 candidates was allowed to speak for 30 seconds. In our speeches, none of the RP supporters mentioned him directly, but we spoke of his message, the constitution, defending liberty, small government, etc. The message must have resonated with independents in the room.

On the first round of voting, we won 2 of 4 seats, Note that winning a seat requires a majority vote, so these particular candidates attracted at least 10 or so independent voters.

After 4 full iterations of voting, Ron Paul supporters eventually won 7 of the 14 seats. I was the 7th of 14 delegates elected.

We also won 7 of the top 10 Alternate slots, which I attribute to some of the less dedicated republicans leaving early.

A very successful evening, and one that was hopefully repeated throughout the state and nation.

I hope to see lots of us in Spokane so we can influence the WA state platform. Best of luck to you all.

Wow, Awesome!

Thank you so much. :D

How many delegates go to the state convention from all districts combined?

Okay, I had to research that one... here's what I found:

There are 1422 total delegates which go to the WA State convention. 18 of Washington's 40 delegates to national are determined by caucus, as voted on at the State convention. Of the balance, 19 are determined by the primary results, and 3 RNC super delegates.

More info on the process is available here.

Best to you!

Great job, LD #46! This is quite impressive considering you were in the minority but won the majority. Kudos!

Cool. Hopefully PA can do our part in a couple weeks. ;)

The 19 are morally bound and elected at the state convention as well.

In my convention for District 37 they had the original post from this thread printed out and placed on each seat in the convention, as well as a sheet filled with anti-Paul propaganda. Our name tags were also color-coded according to Presidential preference, and the list of delegate candidates projected on the wall had next to each name their presidential preference. Needless to say the results were not good.

Just a heads up to future WA conventions

adif-

That sucks big time. Goes to show how careful we have to be and make sure that we come out as endorsing the conservative side, the old Right rather than kooky conspiracy theorists.

Did you get any delegates at all? Any good resolutions?

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm curious how they spun my original post negatively? We should be proud to be Ron Paul supporters as we do in fact support traditional republican values. Can you post a copy of the anti-RP sheet so other conventions can be prepared to debunk it if necessary? Again sorry to hear they somehow used my post against us. The reality is that what we did is no different than what they do in creating a slate of "endorsed" candidates. If they pull this in other caucuses my recommendation would be to speak eloquently and passionately about why Ron Paul represents our best hope forward. maybe we can win some over.. We're the ones campaigning now. ADLF - were you given the opportunity to speak for 30 seconds like we were? The rules are agreed on at the caucus and if speeches weren't part of the original rules, you are able to propose such rule, have it seconded, and put to a vote.

If this continues to happen, leave the party.

If this happens again

I would have walked around and removed all of this material. If they have issues with a candidate then they need to bring it up on the floor so that it can be properly addressed.

Now the grassroots is aware of the dirty tricks. Strike, counter-strike. From now on, arrive EARLY (like an hour or more early, to "help" set up chairs).

At the 48th they demanded to know whom we support in our 30-second speech. There were about 70 candidates for 28 slots. As i wrote earlier, we got slammed. We had the GOP "bigwigs" at our convention. I'm thankful you guys did so well.

The advice rdwndysrf gives is great. I spoke about spending reductions and rec'd much applause. I looked at a fellow's sheet next to me and he had a "+" by my name, and a crossed out "RP" next to that. I asked him what they meant, and he said that he liked what i had to say, but couldn't vote for me because i was an RP supporter.

And, of course, one of the folks on the GOP recommended list had the nerve to say, "the biggest threat to our party is Ron Paul...." Thankfully, he wasn't elected.

Keep it up, Washington. Congrat's to all the delegates to State.

Banana,
sorry to report we struck out completely. not sure that there weren't any shenanigans, but i do know there was a concerted effort to keep us from getting any delegates. we have a few alternates, but that's it.

i asked the district chair and vice-chair for delegate lists prior to the convention and got the run-around ("they'll be available shortly" turned into "these will only be available to the campaigns" - and that didn't happen). KVI guy John Carlson was one of the delegates. Our good friend Luke Esser was a precinct delegate....

At the January district PCO meetings they openly discussed how to keep supporters of "the other candidate" from even voting in the caucuses on the 9th ("Ask who they support for Governor and if they don't say 'Dino Rossi,' they aren't eligible").

The district chair announced at the start of the 48th delegate convention that he would be stepping down to take a position with the McWar campaign.

We may have been able to do a little better - but not by being hones - but i'll give our GOP "brethren" some credit for being able to organize and prepare folks (and get them to turn out) in support of big gov't and big war and against civil liberties. Or, in other words, to turn out against Ron Paul.

Way to go GOP.

surf,

That sucks.

I hope at least your group is investigating into whether there are basis for objections- I don't think they should be able to withheld the list, or asking people to see if they will say Dino Rossi for governor. If it's against the rules, take the proper channel. As for that good ole boy Luke Esser.. well, he's just doing what a good ole boy is supposed to do. Dirty, probably but not against rules.
