Largest Dam Demolition in U.S. History

Meh. It will help everyone hurt by the monstrosity being built in the first place. I'm not for or against it being torn down. But the pearl clutching over it is a bit much. So is interpreting everything that happens from a "Bolshevik" lens.

Explain how it will help anyone hurt previously. Those people are long gone and their families will receive nothing when it's gone besides higher utility rates.

Bolshevik, Leftist, Marxist, globalist, Soros disciple, Trotskyite, useful idiot, etc... It's all just semantics at this point. Pick your favorite. At the end of the day, these people want to destroy your way of life. Look at the people like Bill Gates who think the world is overpopulated and we need to full the heard with abortions and vaccines.

People who currently get less water downstream because the dam is there. Folks who like to catch and eat their own salmon.

I don't know how much water you want downstream. It's the Pacific Northwest, there's plenty of water downstream. There's also plenty of salmon. There would be even more if useful idiots weren't always adding hatchery fish into the population which are basically retarded. I just realized leftists are dumping the salmon equivalent of themselves into the wild with similar results.

Get rid of coal, gas, nuclear and hydro, what’s left? Solar? Good luck with that.

Don't need near as much power creation when much of the population is....hmmmm....downsized.

I recall reading something about gold being used in the next generation of nuclear power plants. I didn't spend much time on it since nuclear power topics is not my cup of tea but source seemed credible. Worth checking out if that topic interests you. It wasn't about transmuting other metals into gold (common search result) but rather the use of gold in the reactor itself somehow.

Interesting, ... never heard of that before. I will search it out of curiosity.

Hydro is one of the most efficient forms of power generation (also "green" if one cares about such nonsense).

If the yellow-bellied weasel-fish must go extinct to further the goals of the rightful masters of this planet, tough.

...we could hold a hearing, but neither the weasel-fish nor the trees would have an opinion.

Reversing a Trump era fatwa, Biden admin and CA start to demolish Klamath river hydro dams

Mid-drought, Mid-Energy Crisis, California to Begin Removing Hydroelectric Dams on Klamath River

JOEL B. POLLAK 22 May 2022

The State of California is about to begin removing the first of four dams on the Klamath River — despite an extreme drought and a looming electricity generation crisis — to improve habitat for migratory salmon and satisfy Native American groups.

As the Associated Press (via Breitbart News) noted earlier this year, President Joe Biden’s administration reversed course after President Donald Trump’s administration blocked the dam removal on California’s second-largest river, which was planned in 2016 after California and Oregon signed an agreement to demolish the dams but still required federal approval.

Now, the demolition has been scheduled for 2023, awaiting only confirmation that dam removal itself would not harm fish.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday:

The first of four aging dams on the Klamath River, the 250-mile waterway that originates in southern Oregon’s towering Cascades and empties along the rugged Northern California coast, is on track to come down in fall 2023. Two others nearby and one across the state line will follow.

The nearly half-billion dollars needed for the joint state, tribal and corporate undertaking has been secured. The demolition plans are drafted. The contractor is in place. Final approval could come by December.

Now, among the last acts of preparation, scientists are trying to make sure the fish and wildlife that are intended to benefit from the emergence of a newly wild river will thrive. While the decision to remove the hydroelectric dams was financial, it was urged —and enabled — by those hoping to see a revival of plants and animals in the Klamath Basin.

The state has not built new reservoir capacity in four decades, while California’s population has continued to grow, making the ongoing three-year drought even more onerous.

Moreover, the state has suffered blackouts in heat waves due to the lack of sufficient energy, as fossil fuel power plants are phased out, along with nuclear power plants. Solar and wind power are not yet able to make up the missing power supply because they are unreliable in calm conditions and in overcast weather.

Earlier this month, the California Coastal Commission rejected a plan to build a desalination plant in Orange County that would alleviate water shortages, as desalination has successful done in San Diego County and in Santa Barbara.

The hydro electric plants on those damns are old and need to be refurbished to continue operation. Instead of spending that money, the electric utilities prefer demolition on the taxpayers dime.

I have no idea whether getting rid of these dams is wise or foolish.

Probably, as in most (all ?) things, it is a trade-off in which the net value can be judged only subjectively.

But what is certainly foolish is making the decision contingent upon federal permission - especially the permission of whatever troupe of overweening clowns happens to be in the White House at the time.

If California is making the wrong decision, then it should do so in spite of, not because of, the approval of the feds.

IOW: California should at least "dare to be stupid" on its own recognizance.

Agree. Feds shouldn't have anything to do with it. I’d guess the fact that the river is “interstate” is one excuse for the Feds to get involved.

As far as the trade-offs in California go, it’s crony corporatism meets “green” lunacy. These old dams and water from them usually have ancient contracts on that electricity and water at very low prices. The utilities, their crony politicians and new “green” energy interests do not want old, cheap energy. They are eliminating competition, and having the demolition and clean up done on taxpayer dollars.

The money aspect then aligns with the squawking insane green cultists, who of course want to demolish dams, because they were man made just like everything else that makes it possible for these feeble minded fools to exist.

Leftism has taught them to accept and even enjoy cognitive dissonance and contradiction. They can simultaneously believe that electricity is the answer to their imaginary problems, and also push to eliminate almost all sources of electricity. Then they complain about black outs. Same with water. Eliminate dams, let all fresh water flow into the ocean, continually increase water usage via population growth, and then complain when there are droughts and the price of water goes up astronomically, and they are told not to water their lawns.
