U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in his first trip to Egypt in the role, said the U.S. government will release $190 million of its pledged $1 billion in economic aid to the country.

The announcement followed a meeting in Cairo today with Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi and is part of “a good-faith effort to spur reform and help the Egyptian people at this difficult time,” Kerry said in a statement.

...

Today, Kerry also announced $60 million toward the start of the Egyptian-American Enterprise Fund, which will fuel “key engines of democratic change in Egypt” by assisting Egyptian entrepreneurs and “its young people.” The fund will rise to $300 million in coming years “as we work with our Congress on funding this and other programs,” Kerry said before traveling to the next stop on his Middle East trip, Saudi Arabia.

190 million can do a lot ot help our schools fund art/physical ed/music....

not to be cold hearted, but why should we care about another country when ours is not doing too well.

Must be a great job going round the world spending the hard earned money of U.S taxpayers.

He's a total pig.

Can somebody please explain to me why America always sends so much money everywhere?

I don't understand.

Anyone else notice the strategic wording of that news article. He "releases" 190m giving people assumption we are just finally giving Egypt what is owed instead of saying we are extracting from the tax payers an extra 190m in periods of economic crisis to pay off another puppet dictator.

hey...you were told we don't have a spending problem...pay attention, and keep paying your taxes slave.

I think this is some misdirected hate. Kerry can't spend money whenever he wants to, it has to be approved by the Congress first. If I'm not mistaken, the money was already there on an allocation from Congress under "foreign aid." Sure, he could have returned it to the Treasury, but that's kind of the equivalent of a charity getting a large donation (a.k.a. tax dollars in this example) and then spending the money for its mission statement, only to realize the money was stolen (by Congress through taxation, in this case). We're blaming the wrong person. It's Congress which is to blame.

The reasoning the Administration would likely give you is that foreign aid buys you influence. Few people bite the hand that feeds them. Egypt and/or other nations become reliant on this aid. Thus, if Egypt does something to anger the U.S., the threat of removing the aid becomes very real and the U.S. has incredible leverage.

Glad not a single penny income tax wise went from this, swinging dick, to support it. Hope ya'll are happy.

Kinda sad that many old people voted for Obama/Romney and now they will lose their social security and medicare soon because Obama/Romney and 98% of the government can't figure out a way to do meaningful cuts and spending more and more money.

Seems people are waking up in the comments.. but they seem to be blaming the wrong people or not realizing their mistakes of not voting for Ron or supporting Rand. Too bad most of them will vote for the same sleeze bag, con artist, establishment candidate.

Meanwhile, my purchasing power shrinks;
however,
190 million dollars did not flood my locale.

Eh, Thanks?

I love the terminology "the money was released ..."

As if it was being held in captivity against its wishes.

lol. good one. Another win for the NWO Elite. Bankrupting the US citizens to prop up foreign despotic governments.

In their closed-door, one on one meeting, Kerry initially called on Morsi to implement economic reforms in order to be eligible for nearly $5 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). But the subject soon turned to unlocking the $450 million in US aid that Congress delayed over concerns about the Islamist leadership in Egypt.

Of the $250 million Kerry pledged, $190 million comes from the $450 million Congress froze. The remainder could be unfrozen and sent to Egypt’s government, Kerry said, if political reforms come through. This is on top of the $2 billion the Washington still provides Egypt.
