Republican presidential candidate and Ohio Governor John Kasich says watching national news coverage while on the road campaigning is not his style.

“I don’t watch the news,” Kasich told Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, according to Yahoo. “I basically watch the Golf Channel when I’m traveling, believe it or not.”

Kasich is an avid golfer. Last November he appeared on "Morning Drive," telling host Gary Williams, “I get to be president, I’m going to play golf." (You can view the clip above.)

Earlier that month a New York Times reporter tweeted a picture of Kasich at a driving range between campaign stops in New Hampshire.

In June 2011 Kasich teamed up with Vice President Joe Biden in a golf match against President Barack Obama and then-House Speaker John Boehner.

The Ohio presidential primary is scheduled March 15.

Letter from Clinton comes back to haunt Kasich

It could be the most damaging “Dear John” letter of the 2016 presidential primary race.

A letter from former President Bill Clinton disclosed just days before the Ohio primary is causing Ohio Gov. John Kasich problems on the campaign trail.

Kasich tells GOP voters he can “get things done” by working with Democrats but also stresses he is a “defender of the 2nd Amendment.”

The letter from Clinton shows Kasich made a deal to restrict the Second Amendment rights of American “on one of the most critical votes on guns ever,” according to a report by Top Right News.

The issue at stake was the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994.

“This is a letter Kasich does not want voters to see…and it could cost him dearly on Tuesday,” Top Right News reports.

In the May 5, 1994 letter, then-president Clinton applauded Kasich’s “courageous” vote on the bill written by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to keep the falsely named “assault weapons” out of the hands of law-abiding citizens, the conservative news site reports.

The full text of the letter is below:

“These weapons have contributed to violent crime and traumatized our nation’s communities for too long,” Clinton writes to Kasich. “By your vote today you have taken the first stop towards getting assault weapons off the streets and out of the hands of criminals.”

Kasich — then in the GOP leadership — was one of only 46 Republicans — mainly gun-hating Northeast RINOs — who backed the ban.

He had obviously met with Clinton personally to hammer out a “deal” with the Democrat president.

Clinton punctuated the letter with “I enjoyed our visit last night.”

Clinton crossed out “Representative” Kasich and replaced it with “John” in his own handwriting.

In the Senate, Republicans opposed the bill 36-7. Even with the Democrats in the majority, the bill barely passed the House 216-214, and was signed by Clinton.

“The law proved so unpopular with Americans that it almost singlehandedly cost the Democrats the Congress in the 1994 elections…handing Republicans the U.S. House for the first time since 1953,” Top Right News noted.

Kasich found himself on the wrong side of the issue and later claimed he regretted the vote. But his subsequent votes prove he remained an enemy of the Right to Bear Arms for many years to come:

“Now GOP primary voters — especially gun-owners — will have to ask themselves…is this the kind of “great deals with Democrats” they can expect from a President Kasich?” Top Right News asks.

As governor Kasich has received an “A” rating from the NRA, but as a congressman he received an “F” from the protector of citizens’ rights to bear arms.

I imagine many Americans, myself included, consider this a positive trait. On its own, it doesn't make Kasich worthy of a vote, but it does make him slightly more human.

I dont watch the news either, and golf is as good as any channel to watch, though i do get annoyed with the forced theatrics and flair....it ismt the nfl, calm down

As far as kaisch himself, he is a level headed guy with some RINO baggage. I wont be voting for him.

There's something wrong with the head of anyone who can sit and watch golf on the Tee-Vee, good grief read a book or take a nap......

Almost makes me want to vote for him... (You know, if I didn't know his policies)

I'd love a President who did nothing but play golf. No signing of bills. No executive orders. No plotting and scheming for the next election?

IIRC, Ron Paul said something along the lines of not having much to do if he were President because he'd give most of the power back to the people and their representation. Yeah, that sounds pretty good.

And with the state of the news lately, I can hardly blame someone for not watching. It's basically a soap opera with ugly people. It's not like they're talking about any real issues.

Kasich supported the 1994 Assault weapons ban.

If he promises to spend most of his time playing golf instead of trying to lead, he has my vote locked.

I can totally understand this. I don't really care for the Golf Channel however, it is oddly addictive once you've stumbled across it. It's probably the most relaxing yet strangely fascinating channel there is. Also, it seems to go on forever... So yeah, I've been guilty of watching a couple times over the years. Not on my own TV though as I have none.

Isn't watching golf kinda like watching paint dry?

Yes. That can be rather fascinating as well. If it's acrylic paint, that stuff dries rather quickly. I wouldn't try it with oil paint. That's rather boring. Takes weeks.

That's probably not what you meant. :D

KASICH: 'IF I GET TO BE PRESIDENT, I'M GOING TO GOLF'
NEW YORK – Ohio Gov. John Kasich, regarded by many as a “Washington insider” for his 18 years in Congress, took part in a 2011 “golf summit” with President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and then-House Speaker John Boehner at Andrews Air Force Base.
The golf outing on June 18, 2011, was seen as an opportunity for Obama to meet Boehner on a personal level after Boehner assumed the
House speakership in January 2011. But looming large at the time was Obama’s push to extend the nation’s debt limit, then at $14.3 billion.

The Washington Post said Boehner’s choice of Kasich as his golfing partner was unexpected.
Apparently, though, Kasich’s golf game did little to persuade the Obama administration to restrain deficit spending, as the national debt currently exceeds $18 trillion. It’s on target to exceed $20 billion when Obama leaves office in January, doubling the amount of debt he inherited from his predecessor, President George W. Bush.

The establishment loves a President who will golf. An absent figurehead who will sign bills and make occasional speeches.
