Joe Arnold reports and says Weigel owes him an apology for accusing Arnold and the local media of only asking questions pre screened by the Rand campaign

On that last point, Weigel owes me an apology. He implies that the local press, namely me, has some agreement with Paul as to what questions I will ask, or that I am unwilling to ask tough questions.

I apologize to Arnold and didn't meant to imply that he was doing shoddy work. There's nothing wrong with an interview that engages instead of combats the subject, and Arnold got Paul to analyze and criticize his own strategy and the media's coverage of him in an interesting, newsy way. My only point was that after a series of interviews in which Paul was asked about how his philosophy would lead him to vote on burning (or, in the Civil Right Act case, theoretical) political issues, he eschewed another round of such interviews while opting to answer hard, but not politically dangerous, questions about his views and the media. Indeed, the headlines that came out of this story were along the lines of "Paul criticizes MSNBC bias" -- the headline that came out of "GMA" was "Paul says Obama 'un-American' to criticize BP."

I'm through with reading David's blog. He's clearly morphing since joining Washington Post. Even when on TV he sounds like a typical status quo big newspaper journalists. He was MUCH better when he was at Reason. I guess he feels compelled to fit in with the big boys otherwise Olbermann won't have him on his show. He was on there slamming Palin the other night about frivolous stuff. I'm not Palin fan but jeez. Who gives a fuk about what her father says? Seriously. It's fluff. He may as well discuss Lindsay Lohan's DUIs. And he's not telegenic at all so I'm not sure why anyone wants him on to discuss this stuff. They should have someone from the E-Channel to talk about Palin. At least they're telegenic when discussing irrelevance.

I read that. And when the journalist defended himself saying two other stations had already followed up on the comments, he outright said the guy should have been going for dirt, essentially. That isn't 'reporting', that is CREATING news. And biased.

He's a beltway libertarian who considers himself an expert on libertarians and I am sure that is why he got the Wa Po gig, but he is the Kochtopus side of libertarianism, which is antiPaul. He puts in gratuitous digs about newsletters whenever he can to imply Ron has a horrible (unspoken) racist past, and now I'm sure he'll do the same with Rand and the CRA any time Rand gets a good headline.

There will never be a shortage of those that support government intrusion instead of individual liberty. These Manhattan media types and even some conservative-populist folks are great at fanning the flames of hate for political gain.

Weigel also posted a good defense of Rand Paul's comments on the issue. I can't speak for the kid, but I think his point was the issue hadn't been fleshed out because the local media hadn't done so.

I think that's a BS point, because Joe Arnold knows that we aren't debating the Civil Rights Act of 1964, so why would he bother to inquire! Joe Arnold is completely in the right to call BS on Dave on this.

I'm not trying to convince people one way or the other, but I think if you asked Weigel and he didn't have to go record, he'd say "OF COURSE I WANT RAND PAUL TO WIN."

Joe has been completely fair with Rand, and I respect him greatly for that. I'm glad Rand was candid enough in the interview to admit that. It was a very respectful interview that didn't try to redefine Rand's views, unlike some of the other interviews he's been on recently.
