Jesse Benton: Why I joined Mitch McConnell’s team

I can see the argument about a primary challenge. But for winning a general election, McConnell can do 100 times better than Benton. Whatever Mitch is up to, I doubt that helping Rand become president is part of it. If anything he wants to stop that.

It would be naive to think a goof like Benton is the puppet master here, while a seasoned machiavellian politician of the highest order, like McConnell is his puppet.

Would be be naive to think that Benton thinks he's the puppet master? Besides, just because McConnell and Benton have different goals doesn't mean they are at odds with each other. McConnell wants to dilute the threat from the tea party, while Benton wants to make inroads into the party.

For those two, this seems like a win-win.

Has it ever crossed anyone's mind that perhaps Jesse is setting up a 2016 Presidential run for Rand and is using Mitch to do it? Having the Senate Majority Leader backing your candidate is very powerful... just a thought..

No, because scum like McConnell would never support Rand, unless Rand becomes a candidate that we won't support anyway.

I get the gut feeling that a "deal" was made back in the spring right around the time we were told that Ron didn't have the delegates right around the time the delegate process was being squished and right around the time the Jesse email came out.

I don't doubt that Benton has all sorts of delusions of grandeur. But what's McConnell really up to? Does he really believe that he can't find someone who will do a better job for him than Benton in winning an election? Whatever he's thinking, I doubt that it involves helping Rand become president.

I'm sure McConnell will if it is in McConnell's best interest at the time, and I assume Rand intends to try to position himself so that that is the case.

But Mitch McConnell has shown that regardless of the political party or the public sentiment, he will be an unwavering defender of our constitutional rights.
I wonder, do you think Benton believes the bullshit he writes? McConnell voted for bailouts, PATRIOT Act, NDAA, warrantless wiretap, the list goes on.

Unless Rand completely goes over to the GOP establishment, how could that be in McConnell's best interest? The reason government keeps growing is that it's in the best interest of politicians for it to be so. And the more powerful they are, the more that is the case.

For Senate maybe. Never for president. Unless of course Rand starts pushing for more military interventions and corporate welfare. In which case I don't really care who supports him.

Nah. McConnell will support Rand for President...I really believe he will. I believe a number of establishment Republicans will support Rand's presidential run. I'm talking even the McCain's and the Graham's of the party.

Why would they do that? Will they just say to all of their big money donors, "We don't need you any more. We have the Ron Paul people now."?

He will support him if he's the Republican nominee. Before that he'll support someone else, just like he did in the Senate race.

This is part of why there is some concern from this move.

I think a lot of it depends on how bad Romney loses this time around.

Well, I agree all of these dunces will support him if he's the nominee...but I just see that as a strong argument to fight as hard as we can to get him the nomination.

But this coalition might portend some other moves by establishment guys to concede to our positions. Who knows...

Yes, but between 2014-16 how much more will Rand have to compromise to get McConnell in his corner ... whether for a POTUS run or re-elected to the Senate? How much is this going to cost the liberty movement to get McConnell to uphold his end of the bargain?

I don't see him as compromising anything, yet. Time will tell, though.
