Jeb Bush, convert to Catholicism

He lives in FL so this makes sense. Catholicism is very popular in the Northeast, CA, the Southwest, TX, and FL. It is by far the most popular religion in the nation and the land mass.

Northeast is heavily Irish. CA, Southwest, Texas, Florida are all heavily Latino. Interestingly enough the same people running around worried about "Sharia law" also worry about illegal immigration when that pretty much guarantees Sharia law can never happen based on the religion of those immigrating to the U.S.

Newt also converted to Catholicism, seemingly out of political motivations.

The majority of the Supreme Court, including all of its so-called conservatives are Catholic. Harriet Miers was supposed to be an evangelical token, and she lived up to the expectations one might have for one by being an intellectual embarrassment. For all of the faddish zeal that evangelicalism directs to Republican politics, it has proven very inept at sticking to much of anything, being bent and shaken from decade to decade like a reed in the wind. Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Church has been the slow and steady race winning tortoise. People like Jeb and Newt have taken note.

The so-called "Judeo-Christian" tradition is nothing but a myth. I think it has been mostly used to further the American Civil Religion. In other words it is political idolatry.

I absolutely agree with this.

I absolutely agree with tthis too. But of course modern evangelicalism has largely rejected the gospel anyway, so the way to Rome has been already paved for hem.

It is true that Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all very similar. Jesus is a key to all three religions.

"Key"? To Judaism and Islam, not so much. Messianic Jews, you can make a case for. However, many Jews rejected Jesus' divinity after the resurrection. Their understanding of the prophets was that the Messiah would be a conquering hero sort of figure-not someone who would be nailed to a cross like a criminal. IIRC, Islam generally regards Yeshua as a sort of prophet rather than the Christ. I don't have my comparative religion book handy, so I could be making some errors here. :o

No. Jesus is certainly not the key for Judaism and Islam. The Bible teaches that Jesus is God. Both Islam and Judaism reject this. Beyond that, the Quran has several a-historical quotations that Jesus never said which were copied from fraudulent gnostic texts.

So he converted because or his wife, meaning he has no religious convictions whatsoever. He's your basic secularist.

Exactly.
I'm not Catholic, but I think I prefer Judge Napolitano's Catholicism to whatever this other stuff is.

Napolitano is better politically. I'm not sure what his theology is, and whether its any different. I'd certainly support him for political office though.

Exactly. Islam puts the claim out there that Jesus is a prophet. I.E. key to the religion. I also agree with you about Messianic Jews. Go Jesus!

Interestingly enough, Hannity had a couple of prominent Catholics on his TV show tonight (Donahue from the Catholic League and a priest), and they all ranted about the evil Muslims. All that was missing was Rep. Peter King...

Jeb's wife, Columba, is Mexican, so perhaps she persuaded him to convert to catholicism.

Could it finally be sinking in that you shouldn't have a terrorist supporter being a spokesperson against terrorism?

Nah.....these people have brass balls.

Won't hurt him at all. The midwestern evangelical protestants loved them some frothy.

I wouldn't say support, but I can certainly understand both the PLO and the IRA.

Neither are on the scale of say AQ or IS. They just want their territory back and to be left alone.

Good point. Another example of someone in the know "converting" for political advantage.

I still find it a highly improbable that there is not a single protestant on the US Supreme Court. They are all catholic or jewish, in a country where protestants are 37% of the populace, catholics 23% and jews 2%. The demographics there are not even close to representative of American society.

Meh. The demographics of congress don't resemble American society either.
