Is Ted Cruz really for a Ron Paul type candidate?

I voted for Addison.

Really like Glenn Addison, but Lela Pittinger not far off the mark either. In fact, she may be closer to Ron Paul than Glenn Addison, in some ways at least. I've taken the time to speak to both of them.

And I voted for Ted Cruz, by the way. I simply don't want David Dewhurst as our senator, and Ted is plenty good enough. Perfect? No. But damn good.

Absolutely.

FWIW I met Lela Pittinger at a barbeque on Friday; she is really cool. Maybe we can get her to run against dewhurst for Lt Gov in 2014.

Met Glenn Addison in Houston at a Ron Paul rally and he is a great guy. I know that others on here have told me that he has no chance of winning so that I should vote Cruz, but that goes against what we are doing. It's like people saying..."Vote Romney because Paul has no chance of winning". They just want Obama out.

See that would only be true if this Cruz guy was as bad as Romney. If he's decent then it's a whole different ballgame if the better candidate has no chance to win.

Wow. i wonder why Ron Paul wouldn't endorse Sheriff Mack.

Probably factoring in electability. He may figure that whoever he endorses will have a lot of money and effort put towards getting that person elected and he wants to optimize the use of scarce resources. Mack is respected by a lot of conservatives, so he has better than a zero chance, but he's still a long shot.

Here are my notes on Cruz (from before the Iran interview)

The good:

-sued the Obama administration over the moratorium on offshore oil drilling
-sued the Bush administration over Medicare Part D state mandates
-defended Texas against the Bush administration and the World Court over a state sovereignty issue
-took the side of Heller in the D.C. Gun ban case
-believes states should put a check on the federal government through lawsuits and interstate compacts
-repeal Obamacare
-repeal Dodd-Frank
-eliminate Department of Education
-eliminate Department of Commerce
-eliminate National Endowment for the Arts
-immediate reduction of corporate tax rate to 15%
-wants required super majority vote to raise taxes
-audit the Federal Reserve and some restrictions to prevent quantitative easing
-opposed debt limit increase
-opposes cap and trade
-opposes indefinite detention without trial
-opposes SOPA/PIPA
-supported Texas TSA anti-groping bill

The bad:

-supports Fair tax or flat tax plans, which are revenue neutral
-allow arbitrarily defined small or medium businesses to opt out of Sarbanes-Oxley, not all businesses
-supports Keystone eminent domain bill
-**Possibly** may support some level of government interference in energy markets; says US has “dangerous dependence on Middle East oil”

great research!

I view people like Cruz as good for slowing down the progress of tyranny. I'm all for that and supporting these kind of people for that reason, but if we ever want real progress towards freedom, it'll take people with a real set of principles to get us there

Thats' right. He certainly will not advance freedom, only perhaps serve to slow its loss.

Hopefully both Pettinger and Addison will run for future office. Pettinger has had a few mentions here, but for some reason Addison got more attention. Apparently she was polling double what Addison was getting.

I voted for Lela Pittenger, but would definitely vote Cruz over Dewhurst in a runoff. Glenn is great on the issues, but I can't get over his class warfare rhetoric. And Pittenger was beating Addison in the last polling that included them both.

If he endorses Paul, it will be used against him by the other asshole candidates as well as the media, and he will lose many more votes than he gains. Does this not occur to this guy, or anyone? Just let it go... it amazes me how stuck in 'level 1 thinking' some Ron Paul supporters are, KNOWING WHAT THEY KNOW, KNOWING WHAT GOES ON IN THIS WORLD THAT IS SO SICK TO EVEN THINK ABOUT. You can not play a normal game.. you can not always do the appropriate or standard thing that his supporters (that aren't going anywhere) expect and would like the most, FOR MANY REASONS, I COULD THINK OF 500 POSSIBILITIES JUST RIGHT NOW, and so much shit that goes on on a day to day basis, from the good guys and the bad guys, has a hidden meaning/sneak attack/surprise/trickery/SUN TZU THE ART OF WAR ESQUE vibe behind it. At least that's my take...

Ted Cruz is a liberty-leaning conservative. He will not be at the forefront of the fight, but he will definitely do no harm. In a runoff he is incredibly better than Dewhurst. I would hope that people would at least look at supporting him as the best choice of the two.

I saw Pittinger speak at a Clear Lake Tea Party rally back in the fall, when Herman Cain was headlining. She came onto the stage wearing literal chains and came off as being pretty much off her rocker. I didn't buy into her spiel, either. Sold REAL well to the Tea Party crowd, though! Call me old-fashioned, but I would rather people use rhetorical devices, not actual props.

I voted for Addison, but if there's a runoff between Dewhurst and Cruz I'll certainly vote Cruz. I've always hated Dewhurst.

I had to hold my nose to vote for Cruz and I'm genuinely surprised Ron endorsed him, but as has been said many times, the alternative is Dewhurst. What will you extreme absolutists do in the event of a runoff? In that case, not voting will be a vote for tyranny imo. This is not a Romney/Obama situation where the difference is extremely marginal. Cruz is terrible on some issues, especially foreign policy, but I beg all the other Texas voters to hold their nose and vote Cruz in the runoff at the end of July.

I think Pittenger and Addison are great, but I will vote for Cruz in a Cruz/Dewhurst runoff, no nose-holding necessary.
