Paul leads Romney 26-5 with voters who say it's 'very important' a candidate spends a lot of time in Iowa...maybe retail still matters some

except that is just tautology 'to those to whom it matters, it matters'

I have a question about the Iowa caucus. I know that this time around, independents and Democrats can participate in the caucus as long as they register as a Republican on the day of the caucus. Was this also the case in 2008? Or did they not allow that in 2008?

Yes, this was the case also in 2008.
But there was also a contested democratic primary, so not many dems joined into the repub caucuses.

I think it was the same. BUt in 2008 all the action was on the Dem side with Obama. PPP says Obama's base was similarly hard to poll to Ron's, new caucusers, first time caucusers, independents and those apolitical. Last time Obama did 8 points better than his rolling average, I believe, but the kids were in school during the caucuses then. They moved the caucus to during winter break, for Ron.

Does that help us or hurt us?

The previous PPP Poll which asked if it was very important a candidate spent time in Iowa:

Mitt Romney: 9% (-4)
Ron Paul: 24% (+2)

So Romney lost 4 pts among this group and Paul gained 2 pts since their poll last week.

22% said it was very important that the candidate spent time in Iowa.

:D

Being during winter break? Hurts. Our supporters can't just pull 10 friends with them from the dorms who kinda like Ron but aren't active enough to caucus for the first time without peer support. We'll see how much it hurts on January 3.

The 2008 caucus took place on January 3rd. School was not in session. Many people think that all the students will be out of Iowa during the holiday break. This is somewhat true. Many of the out of state students will be gone but many Iowans will be home from out of state schools.
