McDonald's has taken a lot of heat lately for the subpar wages it pays its employees, but the company does encourage its workers to find an alternate source of income — federal assistance. A fast-food worker advocacy group has a recording of a phone call made by a worker to the McDonald's employee helpline, called McResources. The operator more or less told Nancy Salgado, an McDonald's employee of 10 years, that signing her and her children up for food stamps should be no problem.

"You would most likely be eligible for SNAP benefits," the operator says. "You know it's a federal program, the federal money comes down the states, and the states administer it," the operator adds, making it crystal clear that Salgado would be taking federal money. Not paying your workers enough, then directing them to federal programs like food stamps is apparently one of the ways that McDonald's inflates its hefty profits.

Here's an edited version of the audio from the call, provided by the advocacy group Low Pay Is Not OK:

If Salgado's name sounds familiar, that's because she's the same woman who confronted McDonald's USA President Jeff Stratton earlier this month and asked him about why she hasn't seen a raise in 10 years and was still being paid $8.25. He replied, "I've been there for 40 years." Salgado was then arrested for interrupting his meeting.

The push for fairer wages, and the recording of Salgado's call stems from a report last week which found that more than half of fast food workers have to go on public assistance programs because of their poor wages, CNN reported. "The report estimated that this public aid carries a $7 billion price tag for taxpayers each year," they explain.

Connect the simple dots, and it turns you're actually part of McDonald's and other fast-food companies' lucrative business plans. Suggesting your employees go get food stamps is technically legal, as The Atlantic's Jordan Weissman points out. It's sorta like suggesting they get a second job. Possibly adding insult to injury, CNN reports that franchise owners have to pay to allow its employees to use the McResources help line. So there may be employees who don't get access to this advice, and yes, that's another way McDonald's is making money.

Wow, could you imagine if the Mexican Govt told its citizens to illegally cross the borders and how to apply for Food Stamps and Medicaid? There would be an influx of Illegal Immigrants into this country the likes of which have never been seen! And they dont even have to apply to work at either Wal Mart or McDonalds to get those Benefits!

I'm out of rep for this guy - can someone please cover me?

Thanks!

Point still remains that no one wants to take responsibility. McDonalds doesnt want to take care of its own employees and the Mexican Govt doesnt want to take care of its citizens. They both tell "their people" (yeah, I said it, plz dont bite my head off, I like my head where its at!) to go as the US Govt for FREE MONEY. Any time anything is offered to someone "for free", it is an incentive to Not Try, Not Produce, Not Work.

Now, if everyone else shirks their responsibilities to their people, what makes you think that the US Govt wont do the same to US Citizens? How many people are jobless, cant collect unemployment, and are ineligible for ANY benefits? When the Roman Empire collapsed, many Roman Citizens banded together in front of their Leaders and demanded more and more freebies. Those that did work were not able to keep the fruits of their labors because they were redistributed to those who responded to the incentives to not work. And here we are 2000 years later not learning a damn thing about history except that Karl Marx was a Leader of the People and Thomas Jefferson was a Terrorist.

Our so called Elected Officials responded to their bribes and did something worse than kill our economy, they've killed the average persons ability and incentive to work. When Food Stamps get cut, expect a Revolution. A very violent one. Or at least extreme Riots.

DIDNT TYHEY GET A BAILOUT AND A ACA WAIVER?

FK THE CLOWN!

hahaha good for McDonalds. This program was put in place to help people who do not make enough to properly feed their families. She should enroll. Suck the paper tiger dry! I laugh at the irony of progressives promoting a program like SNAP and then saying a person shouldn't have to use it. If this lady has been working at McDonalds for 10 years without a raise it is apparent she does not have the skills to move up or the brains to find a new job with better opportunities.

I am sorry life is not fair. If you need proof just look at all of the idiot politician millionaires out there!

Tomorrow wouldn't be too soon...

Think of how inexpensive groceries would be by Thanksgiving for those of us who work.

So?

Raising 2 kids on a fast-food paycheck is difficult. knowingly having 2 kids within your employment time frame with a fast-food restaurant is stupid.

Yeah, McD is an asshole, but it has waivers.

Wow, could you imagine if WalMart did that too?

Walmart does do that.

My senior year management BS I took a class that covered the myriad ways in which Walmart sucks off the dole; had to write a 20 page paper on it. Part of their business strategy is to keep employees eligible for government funded health care and food benefits, section 8 housing, energy assistance... not to mention tax credits, eminent domain abuse, road construction, etc. I remember our findings were that the "average walmart" worth of 200 employees takes in about a half million dollars in fed gov benefits annually... not including state and local benefits to the store itself. IIRC 80% of workers get snap benefits.

I about dropped out of college over it I was so pissed at the professor's insistence that it was "wise business strategy". After I took the class I boycotted walmart for about a decade. I've reached a point of fuck it though and I buy my paper plates and socks there again.

#1 retailer... $15 billion annual profits; while employees suck down $4 billion in fedgov subsidies. Hourly CEO salary = mean annual employee salary.

I honestly don't think that was Sam Walton's vision. Then Hillary Clinton had her hand in this place...right there, there is a conspiracy, I tell you!

Why wouldn't McDonald's do that? Our government gives them the incentive to. You can't be for food stamps and against a company taking advantage of this opportunity.

Because there is an agenda...and that agenda is to make more people dependent on government. It's easier to take over countries when a good majority depend on the government. Divide and conquer!

The agenda is to make a profit.

The market for labor includes the factor of food stamps. We can't expect businesses to pretend it doesn't. The ones that ignore food stamps and then overpay their workers will just lose out to the ones that don't.

A raise is increased compensation because the value of your work has increased for the company. If she's still doing the same work 10 years later with no advancement, likely her value to the company is about the same. The CEO who has been there 40 years has advanced and his work has increased in value. He's right, she's wrong for the most part, it's not clear if they gave cost of living increases, which are necessary. Possibly she started at say $7.50 or $8?

[she] asked him about why she hasn't seen a raise in 10 years and was still being paid $8.25.

because you work at mcdonalds, dipshit.

if i worked somewhere for one year with no raise (without a damn good reason), i'd be out the door.

LOL! Oh yeah they need money. Corporate welfare/citizen welfare they all work hand-in-hand to give government more control over every aspects of our lives. Quit being so naïve. Even the money is a controlling factor.

Capitalism my ass. It's called shifting losses to the faceless, nameless ones who have no recourse to rip up the bill.
