IL-Girl rats out pair of 16 y/o having sex, cop threatens boy, who commits suicide

I'm as moralistic as anyone. OK, except CL/FF. But other than him. ;) I'm right up there. The boy made a very serious mistake. "Sin," they used to call it. I'm not going to excuse it or "take his side."

But Todd, tod, Dannno, et. al are right. The police officer threatened him with this horrible, horrible punishment. He was made to feel that his life was over.

The cop was wrong.

The tattling was wrong.

The whole society is wrong. The whole social framework that should have been helping him to become a man instead destroyed him, and I'm not just talking in one day, either.

Everything that happened in this story is wrong. From beginning to end.

There is nothing in the story that suggests what was going thru the kid's mind when he jumped.

Nothing at all.

The mother asked, "Was he suicidal?" which suggests this wasn't the first time he had been that way.

Blaming it all on the cop is a leap (no pun intended).
The cops asked the mother if he was suicidal, and she said no, because he wasn't. The mother asked no such thing. You did not read the article very carefully.

Pretty much this. Everyone was wrong here. That doesn't make me any less appalled at people on here defending the cop and implying that it's okay to ruin the kid's entire freaking life for the next 70 years by putting him on the registry.

And that, in a nutshell, is exactly where my head is at.

This was a family matter, at most a school matter.

But no, once again, someone calls the cops into the equation, and somebody ends up dead.

I cannot believe people on a so-called libertarian forum are loathe to consider responsibility part of the equation.
Just as I cannot believe that on a so-called libertarian forum, people are absolving a state enforcer of blame, when the state enforcer's actions were not only lies, and wrong, but so heavy handed and over the top, to the point of causing a normally well adjusted kid into committing suicide.

This had nothing to do with the Cop. Kid had sex, recorded it and shared it with friends (which is a crime)... His choices. Instead of owning up to his mistakes and taking his licks, he killed himself... again, his choice.

Shitty all around, but don't take the blame of the individual responsible and put it on a cop because "fuck da police".

Sorry, you can't take the cop off the hook because the kid did something stupid.

I guess you haven't been paying attention to her posts.

^^THIS^^

The kid was 16- in this day and age that's a .....wait for it...wait for it.....KID.

He had consensual sex with another KID. Contrary to some stupid POVs around here that is NOT a sex offender.

Was he stupid to show a "verbal" recording of the act? Obviously- BUT if the "friend" had gone to the girl instead of the school authorities, the chicks in the school would have taught him a big enough lesson to not be stupid again.

The cop, who should NEVER be at the school in the first place, LIED to the kid and broke him.

Hey, but the cops OK 'cause the kid was stupid, amirite?

Most of us are stupid about 80% of any given day- hopefully some around here won't have a lying cop break them down and turn to suicide for doing some stupid act.

How does that suggest this wasn't the first time? You're making shit up out of thin air.

And you read it wrong or typed out your post wrong..

Police asked her if Corey was suicidal — she said he wasn’t — but he was.

The mother was asked, big difference.

When was the last time you made a serious post on this site?

Don't blame the cop. Blame the kid. He clearly made one choice he was not ready to make, and recorded it, which was a choice he should never have made. He should have let a private matter stay private, but in his immaturity, he embarrassed himself and his partner. I'm sorry for his choices and his family's loss, but the cop has nothing to do with it.

The cop lied to this kid and told him that he would have to register as a sex offender... and you say the cop has nothing to do with it.

A female classmate became aware of a consensual sexual encounter between another classmate, who was also 16, and Corey. Saying he’d played a recording of the sexual encounter for a group of his friends, the girl went to school officials to report the incident.

The kid *is* a sex offender. He had sex with an underage girl, recorded it, and showed the recording to his friends. He's not the victim.

I'm completely unable to follow your 'logic' here.......

If the boy was a "sex offender" why won't you label the girl one too?

Or is it the recording you object to?

I don't view either of their actions as "criminal" and would NEVER even joke about such matters...

HH is right about this being a moral issue but remember the sex was consensual....The recording might have been too, neither of us were there.

Second post you come into with a statist mentality. Here since '09 and have still not learned a damned thing.

Ayup. X100.

I remember a time when there was no such thing as a sex registry and incidents like this were handled without police involvement. Teens might have been shamed. But, no stigma was attached for the remainder of life involving every aspect of their life.
I do not really understand this modern concept that dumb kids 18- are adults and adults 18+ are just kids into their 20's.

Exactly...everything is criminalized, everything is a federal case, everything requires a "corrective action" and punitive punishment.

Jesus, I'm so sick of it all...I spend every fucking working day of my life now trying to stuff the square peg of shit happens into the round hole of perfect and total compliance uber alles.

Shit happens...life happens...dumb things happen...no matter how hard you try otherwise.

The only true way to have "zero incidents" is to stop doing, stop living, stop risking, stop achieving.

In short, to die.

There is no learning by fucking up anymore. Once you fuck up you're fucked. For life.
