Although things are changing, statistically even today a disproportional number victims of excessive force are going to be people of color. If Miriam Carey were White, she'll probably be alive today.

That said, for many in media and political establishment focussing solely on 'race' factor (that is an important and legitimate factor in many such cases) seems to be far more profitable for their goals than highlighting use of excessive force/police brutality as an issue in itself. Once our forces go 'soft' in managaing peace at home and musclular culture gets reprogrammed in a 'sensitivity is our strength' european type model, where do we draw the line? Even the phrase 'proportional use of force' is seen as almost an insult by many alpha wannabe (probably with some deep insecurities) folks.
There has also been significant overlap in domestic/overseas peace management forces and training methods and two cultures tend to be intertwined. Globalist neoconservatives funded Dems as well as GOP (both GOP calssic and current Dems funded GOPA wing) will oppose 'softy' image of our forces with so much at stake. Being 'policeman of the world' comes with a certain price.

Study: More Whites Killed By Police Than Blacks

Author and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison caused controversy when she said recently she wants to see a police officer shoot an unarmed white teenager in the back.

“This is the conversation. I want to see a cop shoot a white unarmed teenager in the back,” said Ms. Morrison. “And I want to see a white man convicted for raping a black woman. Then when you ask me, ‘Is it over?’, I will say yes.”

Those comments reflect a common view that black Americans are systemically targeted by the police. However,analysis released over the weekend shows that more white people die at the hands of law enforcement officers than any other race.

Peter Moskos, an assistant professor at New York City University’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, has concluded that during the period ranging from May 2013 to April of 2015 roughly 49% of those killed by LEOs were white, while only 30% were black.

As researchers point out, FBI data on police killings is infamously incomplete. Moskos turned to the website Killed By Police for more data.

While 25% of the website’s data is incomplete, Moskos figures are in-line with two other previous studies that varied in research approaches.

Investigators from ProPublica came about with similar findings using FBI data from 1980-2012. Even the fact-checking PolitiFact concluded that more whites than blacks had been killed by police from 1999-2011.

PolitiFact points out, however, that blacks only make up 12% of the population. By breaking down racial populations it would appear black men are at a 3.5 times greater risk of being killed by police. But that doesn’t include a breakdown of violent crime stats.

“Adjusted for the homicide rate, whites are 1.7 times more likely than blacks die at the hands of police,” Moskos said. “Adjusted for the racial disparity at which police are feloniously killed, whites are 1.3 times more likely than blacks to die at the hands of police.”

The figures Moskos ran included both incidents of justified force and wrongful death.

“The data doesn’t indicate which shootings are justified (the vast majority) and which are cold-blooded murder (not many, but some). And maybe that would vary by race. I don’t know, but I doubt it,” Mr. Moskos wrote on his blog.

The data contradicts widely held opinions regarding law enforcement and race. This perception is fed by the media which reports on incidents which involve race and often ignore those that don’t.

Public outcry is currently focused on the shooting death of Walter Scott at the hands of officer Michael Slager in South Carolina, as well as the suspicious death of Freddie Gray who died in custody of the Baltimore police.

Because a much higher percentage die than whites, instead of addressing all police brutality with all lives matter.
The sad fact is prejudice from police is based on some level of reality, if 50% of the time if police stop a younger black man and he is up to some nefarious thing, but when you stop a white person it is only 5% and you do that for 10 years where does that put your mindset as a police officer?

Prejudice usually is formed from life experience, some is taught, but usually it is formed.

For example there is a certain race and age group near to where I had once lived that were horrible drivers, does that mean they are all 100% bad drivers, no. But if even 50% are, it forms a prejudice that is based on the reality. The police live this every day and it must be very difficult to cope with especially if you are trying to be a "good" cop.

Everything people are reacting to with Floyd's murder - the casual nature of it, the fact that he was already incapacitated, the fact that there was an eternity of time for the cops to change their minds, the torturous nature of it, the fact that the system closed ranks around the cops and prevented anything happening from it, it all happened with Nick Christie, and it was eleven fucking years ago, before Ferguson, before Trayvon, before BLM was even conceived.

AND the fact that Christie had initially not been suspected of any crime at all.

It was all precipitated by well meaning but ignorant family calling cops for a "welfare" check.
