If we could buy 1000 acres or more, who would join us?

The sat Internet systems I've seen have been expensive on a per-month basis. The download was from the sat and was reasonably fast, but upload was via POTS and slow. It also tended to go out whenever it rained.

yes, upload is about like dial-up. it goes out with even heavy cloud cover.
it requires a certified technician(by law) to install. you cannot legally install the system yourself.
so you will have about a $500 setup fee and spend about $80 a month from subpar internet.
cellular internet would be better if you have a tower near by.

I have had it snow at a 3 inch and hour rate and keep service. If the snow builds up on the disk it will go out though.
 
also, no streaming services like netflix/amazon or pandora. the info comes in burst, not steady streams.
youtubes, you can at least pause an let buffer. though limited by bandwidth bucket.
you won't be able to use any of your on demand movies either if you have such services on a satellite/cable provider.
Yeaw movies are out but youtube videos play without buffering.

I guess we need to figure out what our needs are law wise too:

guns
permitting structures
water and natural resource rights
homeschooling
farming/ranching
independent power via turbine; solar; natural gas; biogasification
taxes (if no state tax, how high is property tax?)
federal land -


what else?

Even before that, how does the community make decisions and what are the limits of the decision making? What happens when someone is opposed to some decision in order to avoid having to help pay, but they benefit from it's passage? (for example, if there is a common lane that serves the community but someone refuses to pay for its maintenance)
 
One thousand acres isn't that much land. Considering one section (640 acres) is one square mile. One thousand acres comes out to around 1.5 square miles. I would also vent the people who I allowed on my "compound" only allowing people with actual skills such as carpenters, gunsmiths, electricians, plumbers, butchers, mechanics, doctors, chemists, biologists, agronomist, etc.

Just throwing some ideas out there. Nothing is set in stone yet. Read through the posts, what you mention has been discussed.
 
Perhaps 3-10 acres plots according to needs and what could be afforded. Contracts could be made with those that can afford to buy more (chip in more) and make contract for those that want a piece, etc... A new Town (Liberty Forest) ?

My friends have a 200+ acre working farm with 2 nice houses, several cabins and it's all off the grid. It's in southwestern New Hampshire. They have a bunch of events there throughout the year. They do maple syrup, wood, rabbits, chickens, pigs, farming, apple orchard and so on. The property cost them less than $500,000 and the property taxes are low. An owner is the chair of the local school board.

If you want 1,000 acres though, you might be able to find that in 1 of the property tax free communities in New Hampshire. No property taxes, no general sales taxes or personal income taxes. Regardless, other than the area where the house is, the rest of the property would have very low property taxes, anywhere in New Hampshire. That's just how we roll in NH. Property taxes tend to be very low for large land owners. The people voted in the change to the NH Constitution to keep property taxes very low, so it's quite popular here.
