If Kucinich wins nomination, Ron Paul could be his veep

Acworth, New Hampshire -- Call it the liberal-libertarian ticket, where left meets right and Democrat Dennis Kucinich picks Republican Ron Paul to be his vice president.

Kucinich, the Cleveland congressman running in a longshot bid to become president, suggested it himself today.

"I'm thinking about Ron Paul" as a running mate, Kucinich told a crowd of about 70 supporters at a house party here, one of numerous stops throughout New Hampshire over the Thanksgiving weekend. A Kucinich-Paul administration could bring people together "to balance the energies in this country," Kucinich said.

It would create a stunning, if dizzying, blend of beliefs, wedding two politicians who hold different views on abortion rights, the role of government in providing health care, and the use of government in fostering -- or hampering -- the public's greater good. Those are among the reasons it would never work, said a spokesman for Paul, a congressman and doctor from Texas.

"Dr. Paul and Rep. Kucinich are friends and there is a lot of mutual respect," Paul communications director Jesse Benton said in an e-mail when asked whether a running-mate spot on the Kucinich ticket would be attractive to Paul. "They have worked, and will continue to work, together on the ending the war and protecting civil liberties.

"However, Ron wants to substantially cut the size and scope of the federal government. There are too many differences on issues such as taxes and spending to think a joint ticket would be possible."

Kucinich and Paul are gadflies to their parties' establishments. Kucinich challenges Democrats to stop cozying up to corporate interests, while Paul challenges Republicans to shed the trappings of big government.

Both frequently cite the Constitution as providing the authority for their agendas. Paul never votes for legislation unless the measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution, his campaign says. Kucinich keeps a pocket-size copy of the Constitution handy, brandishing it to invoke authority for such proposals as the impeachment of Vice President Cheney, one of Kucinich's signature issues.

Speculation of a Kucinich-Paul ticket has surfaced on the Internet, where it also has been shot down. But Kucinich's wife, Elizabeth, did not dismiss it when asked about it after a recent Democratic candidates' debate in Las Vegas. Speaking to the website RawVegasTV, she called Paul "a great truth-teller," adding that Paul has "voted 100 percent right on the war."

Today, her husband said, "Think of how you could unite the country, having a Democrat and a Republican on the ticket."

This is like Ringo Starr saying he'd like to write songs with Paul McCartney. Nice sentiment but, well....

too bad ron paul is gonna win the presidency. he doesn't need kucinich's help to get in the white house.

I don't see Kucinich winning anything at this point, as he doesn't have the funds. But people say we don't have a chance either ... so ...

I like Kucinich, but I wouldn't want him as our VP. If Hillary gets the nomination, I think we need a strong woman to combat her in the VP role. Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska, may be a really good choice worth looking into. I know she ended a lot of corruption in Alaska when she took over.

I have no idea why people like Kuccinich, he is the opposite of Ron Paul in nearly every way.
He isn't. I believe they both are sincere individuals with the welfare of the American people as their first concern. That's rare. I may disagree with him on issues, but he still has my respect.

I think this is mostly Kucinich trying to steal some attention by riding the good doctor's coattails.

All politicians are corrupt except for Ron Paul and Kucinich, this is why people like Kucinich here.

I wouldn't worry about Kucinich winning. He isn't in enough lobbyists pockets to go anywhere :D
I think he would make a great Secrertary of State though.

Now that's a good idea. Ron Paul knows he can't end social welfare overnight, he always talks about a transition out of programs like Social Security. Dennis Kucinich would be a great addition in a Cabinet Position in a Ron Paul Administration.

Kucinich just can't beat Hillary or Obama. Ron Paul has a good chance at beating Giuliani and Romney.

I can respect Kucinich as a "real Democrat" but nearly everything he wants to do means an expansion of Federal government.

I think he could make an appropriate mayor for a city in a left leaning environmental state. But I shudder at the thought of him as president.

My opinion:

If we are to win, we need to win over a lot of people, and a lot of those people are against this war spreading into Iran and a lot of people happen to be Democrats that have yet to embrace Ron Paul's policies on economics and domestic policy. But, first things first we need to end this war and if it takes playing nice with other groups that are against the war then so be it. If and when Kucinich does not get nominated, his people and others will be looking for a pro-peace candidate.

Watch this video and take notice of how Ron Paul answers the question. It is this kind of respect for what we have in common with Kucinich's followers that we need to emulate in my opinion.

the idea is preposterous and i feel that kucinich is using dr paul's popularity in a dishonest manner.

dr paul is a republican for a reason (a reason that he himself eloquently defended many times).

They have each stated publicly they are friends. No one is being dishonest. They are friends that disagree on social programs, but they are friends and we should stress that to Kucinich supporters to build some support for if/when Kucinich drops out and they are looking for a pro-peace candidate.

whether they are friends or not is, frankly, irrelevant. by your logic he could put his wife for a vp - i am sure he is much better friends with her. and it sounds like a much better ticket, actually.

kucinich has basically no supporters and they should be the last of our worries. we need guiliani, romney and thompson supporters - not kucinich supporters.

you are obviously not a republican and you don't understand how incredibly damaging the mere mention of 'kucinich' sounds to republican ears.
