I want the truth.

Oooo - good catch!!

Honestly, I think it has become sort of a blame game. Gary North is already called a racist by people who know him (and don't like him). Unless this news picks up pace (which I dont think it will) -- I don't think we'll ever know.

According to Eric Dondero (former Ron Paul aide who was fired by Ron and who is running against him in 2008 for Congress) the expose in 1996 in the Houston Chronicle was much more revealing and that TNR barely touched the surface. Though, that same paper after more investigation found out Paul had nothing to do with the letters and the article (and the attacks the Democrats were putting up against Paul) was dismissed since Paul had nothing to do with the newsletter beyond 1988 (note that the racist content was written in '90/'91).

Very good summary!

i think a very good gcase has been made that Dr Ron Paul did not and would not ever write or believe anything remotely racsist but smarter people than me have already pointed out that even if he did why does it nmatter? sure it means he has some quircks and some parts of him that are not 100% wholesome but so does everybody in the world. Nobody claimed that Dr. Paul was an angel, just that he was the best possible man for the job of turning this country around and a few bad comments will never change that!

I have to believe that if I can see this then the rest of the American people can see it to! We all put so much faith and so much money into Dr. Ron Paul I stll believe that he can turn this thing around! So you want the truth? Well I'll tell you the truth! unless Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson crawl out of their graves, Ron Paul will be the only man to put this nation back on the right track! (and even if they did they would see Dr Paul and smile at each otrher and say "Looks like somebody got our message! lol

You're right - I was losing faith in the rest of the American people far more than I was losing faith in Dr. Paul (I never lost that).

I guess the only thing to do is keep fighting and see what happens.

Thanks everyone - I do feel better about this now.

Me as well. After hours of my own research, I've come to the conclusion that Dr. Paul had nothing to do with them.

The comments of Dondero who has EVERYTHING to gain by bringing Paul down even agrees that he was not involved with them. I believe this is a byproduct of Paul being such a good man. Even those enemies who know him cannot speak untruths about him.

My biggest problem with the whole thing (aside from the fact that even more people will now associate libertarianism with racism) is that a few months ago, I was under the impression that it was one or two ghost written articles, but it appears that the writing went on for a year or two. I don't think Ron Paul wrote the pieces, and I don't think he's a racist. That being said, he absolutely is responsible for them, and should damn well have dealt with this in a straightforward manner weeks ago. I don't give a rat's ass how many times he's answered these questions before, this is the White House we're trying to make a sincere effort at winning, this movement is FAR bigger than he is, and not stepping up to the plate is tantamount to not giving a shit, IMO. Couple this with the weaknesses of the official campaign, the focus on secondary and even fringe issues as opposed to the big two - civil liberties and the war, and long story short, it simply shows that Ron Paul isn't interested in winning, and that lets all of us down. Will I still vote for him? Probably. But I'll be holding my nose while I do it, just like I have every other time I've pulled the lever for the last 16 years.

If it's the White House you are really after, then you should realize that the strategy you propose would sink him completely. Drawing more attention to the matter other than to reiterate what he has already said will simply look like he's trying to backtrack to save his campaign. You know well enough that anything that even whiffs of him stumbling and fumbling around trying to make this go away will only attract the the worst elements of the smear artists in the MSM. When they sense they have someone on the ropes, they go in for the kill.

It happened. The press knows about it, and there's nothing anybody can do to make it go away completely. But, the damage can be minimized if he treats it as he has - an ugly event that is in the past and has nothing to do with his message or campaign.

As Jack Ryan once said, "No sense defusing a bomb after its already gone off."

Again I know he isn't racist but I hope he runs an open campaign the same way he will run an open administration

I think the witch hunt should stop. I believe in innocent until proven guilty.

I have been following Ron for years, so I never had a doubt. This is just smear politics plain and simple. It`s nothing new, and Ron is not the first nor will he be the last to have to deal with it. It`s as American as apple pie-albeit a rotting one. Read "Adams vs Jefferson, The Tumultuous Election of 1800. By Ferling, to see just how much things have stayed the same throughout history. Stay Positive! ;)

Angry

I want the truth too, and my money back. He can't claim he didn't know these news letters were being sent in his name. NO WAY. I am angry. I own a business in a very liberal area, I have had his signs in my window for at least 6 months! In my local neighborhood paper on the front page an article "Ron Paul Rascist"
I may have ruined by business by supporting this man in a VERY public way.

"I didn't write them" is NOT GOOD ENUF FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might have to buy Obama signs...If the campaign doesn't come up with a better answer then i just might have to too...

It pains me soo much to say that because I love what Paul stands for.

Well if your "local newspaper" said it, it must be true. At the very least they know how to push the buttons of liberals who are obsessed with racism. Obsessed to the point of poisoning race relations in America by calling racism on just about every issue you can name. Constantly stirring up trouble and preventing everyone from just letting it go and getting on with the more important things in life. People like that are sickening. Maybe you should move your business to a more "normal" part of town.

Don't you think this would have come up, at the very least, in the last congressional campaign? I mean, if this thing had legs at all it should be OLD news by now that has already been asked and answered. Otherwise, I guess everyone thinks that the people of Texas were duped ten times by RP or that we just make a practice of electing racists here. WTF?

Hahaha, Obama is a racist too. Those will probably come out right after you change.

This candidate was not presented to me in this way. Had I known I never would supported him. It looks like many of you "know"
Liberals stirring up trouble, who has stirred up trouble? The Ron Paul Newsletters have. Sickening, my god get a clue what is sickening. A more "normal" part of town, where would that be rural Texas?

Amazed!

It's come up MANY times before when he was up for election. Always proved to be unsubstantiated.

I`ll name a few right off the top of my head- Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Ray Negan, the whole freaking democratic Congress after Katrina. Half the fucking town in the Rugby team case, and half the liberals on this board crying about racism on just about every issue. I could go on forever.

You answered my question. You knew what you were signing up for.
I wanted to stop the war, and restore our constitution.
I made a terrible mistake.
I need to take a shower and put an apology letter in my business window to
any and all who read my signs.

Wow, just wow.

I dont even know what your question is. I also want to stop the war and restore our Constitution. I am not racist and neither is Ron Paul. Are you obsessed with racism? if so snap out of it.

BooHoo.. Freedom is dangerous.. Go take your signs down and hide in your basement.. Or stand up like a man (or woman) and stand steadfast by your ideals for freedom.. You are worried about a couple of signs? Political correctness aside it is people that have had this mind set that have allowed this country to get to the point we are now at.. Bravo..

Even if Ron Paul didn't pen those offensive articles, at the very least he is sympathetic to the views expressed in them as I don't buy his "I had no clue whatsoever what was going on" explanation.

Bottomline: he is a closet racist and homophobe or he is a clueless nincompoop who has no idea what is being written under his name.

Both are bad.

And both will do irreparable harm to libertarianism, unfortunately.

Unlike some of the posters above me, I can see how an honest, potentially a bit naive at times, man like Dr Paul could have entrusted people he knew to write and publish these things with his name attached. (huge mistake, as has been said before)

Honestly people- READ! What some of the other above posters said has to be true- would this not have come up before in runs for Congress? TEN TIMES???? HELLO! WAKE UP!

As if none of us have ever made a mistake before. I am just glad Dr Paul has actually made a mistake! He seems un-humanly perfect when you look at his voting record, and especially when you compare him to the other candidates, etc! Shame on those of you who are so judgmental!
