I just bought a macbook 15.4" retina

I really can't say enough a about this MacBook transaction. I purchased my first Mac which was IMac 27" with Snow Leopard 3 years. Awhile later we got another with Lion. All these devices came to me fully loaded with lots of good stuff. Paid $1700 for each one of those. He even furnished applecare for a measly $130 a year after purchase. Recently we decided that we wanted a laptop. I use a windows laptop at work and have owned several PC laptops and have been less than thrilled with any of them. So I email Brian. I get a smoking deal on this MacBook Pro with Retina and he even hand delivered it to my house. He took my Snow Leopard with him and I just got it back with Mountain Lion and all my files intact with upgrades on everything and that was complimentary! All I can say is Wow and extend a heartfelt thank you to Brian and his brilliant technician Eric. I found Brian on ebay and then realized he wasn't too far from me. Anyway he doesn't deal with Ebay anymore. I asked him how he was going to sell computers now. He said, "well I have sold to 30,000 customers over the years." He has a valid point because I wanted something so I contacted him and compared his pricing and total value against everything. The best machine for the least expensive price. This demonstrates the concept of quality service!
 
I am considering a mini mac. And then maybe installing an SSD and 16GB of RAM. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with mini macs?

Looks like these are add-on options in some cases. I had to go to the second most costly one before a SSD was an option. But the amount charged by apple for the SSD and the RAM is so expensive as to be silly, from what I can deduce. If one can put these items in themselves then one can save a lot of money.

You should check first to see that the RAM isn't built into the motherboard. I just found out today that my MacBook Air's RAM is not upgradable since it is built into the motherboard (well that's what the guy at the Mac Store told me today). I don't know if that is the case with the Mac Mini.

The RAM on the Mini is not built in to the main logic board. I've swapped RAM in Mini's myself.

I was shocked as well when I found out today. I bought one with 4GB because it was the only one in the store and I was flying to Colombia the next morning. I was expecting to be able to upgrade to 8GB, but I guess I'm screwed with 4GB until I replace my laptop.

That said, my 2 year old laptop has an Intel I5 dual-core processor, 8gb of memory and cost $450.

When I have $2,000 to throw at a laptop, I'll consider buying a Mac. I just don't think the majority of people out there are that thrilled to spend that much more for the similar performance.

I run linux, and to be honest, I intended my laptop to be hackintosh. I got really close, I actually had OS X installed and semi-functional on my ASUS laptop, but I couldn't get that last leg functional and so I gave up and installed Ubuntu.
 
Oh, and I really do like the increased resolution on the retinas, again, if you have the $$ and that's what you wanna do go for it.

I'd sooner increase the resolution on my desktop monitor and/or tv though.

Why would you bother increasing the resolution on your tv beyond 1920x1080?

I guess if you have a large ultra HD tv and you can deliver that resolution to it.

Might not really matter unless you have a very large TV or a projector people sit so far away from tv's.

I didn't mean a TV, I know there are 4K resolution TVs now on the market, I meant content. Nothing you get on cable/satelite/over the air is over 1080i. Neither is BluRay. Neither is anything streamed.

Hmmm, odd.. I get results for Rise of the Guardians Ultra HD torrent, 6 Ultra HD videos to test your retina, Iron Man 3 Ultra HD, Guilt Trip Ultra HD

Will probably be more popular in time.

because around 300dpi is where images begin to look photorealistic. Particularly if you do print production, graphics design, etc you will notice an intense difference. ....

nevermind, I missed the "TV" there.

The only reason to get a TV above 1080p is if you are using it as a computer monitor, or you plan to still have that TV in 10 years when media resolution is higher. At this point a CBA would not justify it, since the primary benefit is years off in the future.
