I just bought a macbook 15.4" retina

I think if any forum member were using this device they would be impressed! Does anyone have a macbook retina?

I'm thinking about it...would love to hear more about your experience with it once you get going!

wow! very impressive machine! I am not rich but am tired of spending big $$ on shitty laptops. We have two 27" iMac's and have had zero issues with them. So obviously when my wife mentioned her desire to own a laptop apple was a player. The guy I purchased my mac's from loads all kinds of goodies on it for me. This machine has apple care until 2016 and has office, windows and so much more. Unbelievable quality.

The retinas are beautiful. I have the iPhone 5 which has retina but its nothing compared to the iPads and laptops.

the touch pad is amazing! Two fingers does this three does that. Very nice. Beautiful resolution.

If I were you I'd return it and wait 6-8 weeks for the rumored refresh with the Haswell chipset. But, either way, you've got quite a machine there and you should be very happy ;)

I've never owned an Apple computer before...always PC (I do have an iPad which I LOVE). I wonder how much of a learning curve there would be.....

The only learning curve is to not have to reformat and have problems. Apples are bullet proof. Seriously if you had this laptop for one day you would want one! Don't get me wrong if I was looking for a home computer the first investment would be a 27" iMac. They are cheaper than the macbook. But this laptop is amazing.

A person would have to use this to understand. If you like ice cream and convince yourself that the cheapest brand is the best then Apple products are not for you. However, if you are honest with yourself and savor the flavor of the ice cream you would have to agree that Hagen Daz is about as good as it gets.

I'll gladly trade you my mid-2009 Macbook Pro that I bought in 2010 with a small inheritance. :p

As someone who uses both Windows and MacOS (and did so professionally before I jumped both feet into politics) I will say that there really IS a learning curve. The MacOS methodologies are different enough from Windows to create real confusion. Most MacOS stuff is set up far more ergonomically, and it has been my experience that when you get stuck trying to do something in OS X, it's because you are making it TOO complicated and overlooking a much simpler means.

That's been my experience anyway. Whenever you get stuck trying to do something YOU KNOW the Mac should do, it almost certainly does, it's just laid out way simpler than you were expecting and you are trying to find a complicated way to do it that doesn't really exist.

probably so. But quality is quality. This machine is nice. I will be happy for a long time with it! Plus I purchased if for a great price, so I am pleased.

I completely agree. I bought a MacBook Air last week and I love this thing.

I agree, there definitely is a learning curve as I'm experiencing. That said, everything is pretty logically and the UI is so easy to use and navigate.

UNIX

root has spoken

p.s. I love my iPad too.

Isn't OS X based on UNIX Through NeXTSTEP?

A lot of the development of NeXT Step was brought in, but the OS X kernel is largely based on FreeBSD. It's as POSIX compliant as any BSD system, all the fancy stuff on top is really just a complicated window manager. You can run X86 or Enlightenment right out of MacOS but you have to install the hooks they use. It's just a point-click install for X86 that comes with the install itself.

As soon as you crack open a terminal, any Unix user will be completely at home. And of course you have your choice of a dozen different shells.

I like Linux, I like big Unix even better, and I REALLY like BSD, which is why I was thrilled with the Mac transition to X, as Apple chose what I believed at the time (and still do) the best Unix fork out there. Personally I would have preferred OpenBSD over FreeBSD but I was not a part of that process so I do not know what all considerations went into that.
