I was born n' raised in AZ, with a much higher hispanic population than texas as a percentage (IIRC), and I didn't pick up much Spanish. It's spoken a lot here and plenty of spanish signage is to be seen, but not enough for a kid to pick up unless one lives further South in a rural town closer to the border.
Hispanics make up 30% of arizona's population and 40% of texas's. There are almost twice as many Hispanics in Texas as there are people in Arizona! There are as many Mexicans in Texas as people on Arizona
